About the Role

The Special Education Teacher will plan and implement developmentally appropriate classroom activities in an innovative educational setting based on established performance standards and best practices.

Responsibilities

  • Serve as a collaborative leader of the classroom team, providing instruction in various settings using effective techniques customized to individual student goals and objectives.
  • Provide appropriate instruction to other classroom staff.
  • Organize the classroom environment, instructional materials, and schedule to maximize learning, including maintaining clean and organized work and common areas.
  • Utilize appropriate assessment tools and ongoing data collection to:
    • Develop and implement goals and objectives for each child.
    • Measure and communicate present levels of performance.
    • Make referrals as necessary.
  • Adhere to the school philosophy regarding behavior management and implement relevant techniques appropriately.
  • Understand and fulfill the role in language and communication facilitation, utilizing appropriate techniques for each child.
  • Conduct or participate in all relevant activities and meetings, such as:
    • Initial and Annual Reviews
    • Parent/Teacher Conferences
    • Open School Night
    • Home Visits
    • Parent Center meetings
    • Team, Department, and Classroom Meetings
  • Comply with regulatory requirements and school policies, completing and submitting necessary documentation within designated timeframes.
  • Maintain effective interpersonal relationships with team members, parents, staff, supervisors, administrators, and outside agencies.
  • Demonstrate:
    • Open communication, flexibility, and the ability to learn and utilize team-building strategies.
    • The ability to self-evaluate, utilize supervision, and problem-solve.
    • The ability to both offer and accept assistance to/from others.
  • Perform all other duties as assigned.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s or Master’s Degree.
  • Experience working with special needs school-age students (preferred, ages 10-21).

Certificates & Licenses

  • New York State Certification in Special Education for Students with Disabilities, Grades 1-6 or 7-12 (Initial or Professional).
  • Willingness to consider candidates with a BA who are currently enrolled in a Special Education Master’s Program leading to Teacher Certification.
  • Trained or willing to be trained in CPR/First Aid, SCIP, CPI, and Choking Prevention.

Physical Demands

The role involves minimal physical demands as most activities are not applicable (N). However, the following may occasionally (O) be required:

  • Push/Pull: Up to 12 lbs.
