Summary

Performs a wide variety of duties relating to the special educational needs of assigned patients during hospitalization. Provides services to children and adolescents.

Responsibilities

  • Affirms educational needs of patients.
  • Contacts previous educational settings and reviews written records.
  • Assesses, supervises, or approves educational needs before the Diagnostic Conference date.
  • Prepares assessments in adherence to departmental format.
  • Generates lesson plans no later than the second day of educational programming.
  • Writes lesson plans reflecting major areas of instruction appropriate to the academic level of each patient.
  • Provides detailed lesson plans to allow substitutes to implement.
  • Maintains lesson plans in a visible location.
  • Reviews and updates lesson plans weekly.
  • Maintains a classroom environment conducive to learning.
  • Assigns academic tasks and materials at the start of the school day.
  • Provides individualized instructional help as needed.
  • Behaves professionally, reports on time, and gives advance notice for leave.
  • Reports on child’s academic progress through written or verbal communication.
  • Identifies factors impeding academic progress and states strategies employed.
  • Assists in the discharge process, ensuring local school systems are informed.
  • Submits discharge summaries according to departmental format.
  • Demonstrates effectiveness as an interdisciplinary team member.
  • Maintains positive relationships with team members.
  • Consults with other clinical staff and interprets evaluation findings.
  • Participates in departmental activities and suggests improvements.
  • Shares expertise and supports other educational staff.
  • Participates in Total Quality Management.

Minimum Qualifications

- Bachelor’s degree in special education; certification from the Rhode Island Department of Education (appropriate levels of handicapped certification). - Demonstrated knowledge and skills necessary to provide care to patients throughout the life span with consideration of aging processes, human development stages, and cultural patterns.

Experience

- Minimum of one year teaching experience.

Independent Action

Performs independently within department policies and practices. Refers specific complex problems to supervisor where clarification is needed.
