Teacher of the Visually Impaired

10-month, full-time position reporting to the Coordinator of Specialized Programs and EC Director.

Responsibilities

• Provide Visual Impairment (VI) Services as described by DPI Guidelines for Exceptional Children.
• Conduct comprehensive assessments to understand the visual needs and learning preferences of students, including generating professional evaluation reports.
• Develop and implement individualized educational plans that address the unique needs and goals of each student.
• Provide direct instruction and support to visually impaired students, utilizing appropriate adaptive techniques and tools.
• Collaborate with classroom teachers, parents, and other professionals to ensure students' needs are met effectively.
• Provide guidance and support to other school staff to create an inclusive and supportive learning environment with access to instruction.
• Adapt and modify educational materials to accommodate students' visual impairments.
• Assist in the development and implementation of students' Individualized Education Programs (IEP).
• Monitor and document students' progress, adjusting strategies as needed, and provide progress reports as required by the IEP.
• Document services provided, including attendance, direction instruction content, and student response to instruction.
• Maintain VI equipment, provide inventory updates, and ensure broken devices are repaired.
• Travel between school locations as needed.
• Perform other related work as required or directed by supervisor.

Requirements

• North Carolina licensure or certification as a Teacher of the Visually Impaired (TVI).
• Special Education background is preferred.
• Experience working with visually impaired students, preferably in an educational setting.
• Strong knowledge of adaptive techniques, assistive technology, and instructional strategies for students with visual impairments.
• Effective communication and collaboration skills to work closely with students, parents, educators, and colleagues.
• Understanding of Regular Curriculum and Extended Content Curriculum, Grades K-12.
• Ability to use a variety of equipment and classroom tools such as computers, copiers, typewriters, calculators, pencils, scissors, and equipment for children with special needs.
• Physical ability to exert a negligible amount of force frequently or constantly to lift, carry, push, pull, or otherwise move objects. Due to the amount of time spent standing and/or walking, physical requirements are consistent with those for Light Work.
