Teacher of the Visually Impaired

About the role

The Teacher of the Visually Impaired will be responsible for providing specialized instruction to students who are visually impaired or have visual impairments, including those with additional disabilities. The position is based at a very accessible location in Alaska and runs from August to May, with potential extended services during the summer.

Responsibilities

• Provide individualized instruction to students with visual impairments
• Develop and implement educational plans aligned with Individualized Education Programs (IEPs)
• Collaborate with other educators, families, and community members to support student learning
• Facilitate challenging and mediated IEP meetings to ensure appropriate educational programming
• Deliver professional development on special education strategies
• Ensure compliance with Alaska Special Education laws and procedures

Requirements

• Bachelor's or Master's degree in education or special education
• Minimum of 30 college credits in special education
• Valid Alaska teaching certificate with endorsement in special education - visually handicapped and/or orientation and mobility
• Recent experience managing large caseloads with a variety of exceptional students
• Flexible and adaptable to working in multiple settings
• Knowledge of current best practices in special education
• Knowledge of various teaching strategies for diverse students
• Demonstrated skills in behavior management and parent communication
• Excellent interpersonal skills promoting positive relationships

• W2 or 1099 hourly rate available
