Teacher of The Deaf (TOD License & Certification)

About the role

This position REQUIRES a valid Texas Deaf and Hard of Hearing EC-12 certification.

Supervisory Responsibilities

  • Supports and manages teaching assistants.
  • Mentors teachers who do not have a degree or knowledge in Deaf Education.

Duties/Responsibilities

  • Assure that educational programs are aligned with program participants and DISH mission.
  • Develop, prepare, organize, and evaluate curricula for educational programs.
  • Develop and implement educational programs for children with hearing loss aged 12 months – 5 years old.
  • Turn in lessons and notes weekly using formal and informal assessments.
  • Keep up to date data on each student in developmental areas and academic skills.
  • Show knowledge of each child’s hearing and intervention history.
  • Maintain active watch of students during class time, lunch, transitions, recess, etc.
  • Complete daily amplification checks of student equipment and troubleshoot accordingly.
  • Supervise bathroom needs and provide toileting assistance as needed.
  • Maintain organizational skills, classroom management, composure in stressful situations, patience when handling children, diagnostic teaching skills, flexibility during schedule changes and special events.
  • Collect and maintain all required data on students.
  • Monitor and document student progress, attendance, and behavior.
  • Develop and adapt lesson plans to individual student needs.
  • Assume direct responsibility for students during school hours.
  • Supervise junior staff to ensure safety and programs are run according to DISH protocols and procedures.
  • Carry out and assist junior staff in developing appropriate student behavior through positive reinforcement strategies and techniques.
  • Maintain appropriate contact with parents regarding child behaviors, classroom management, and parent expectations.
  • Help with before/after school programs as well as Summer programs as needed by Education Coordinator.
  • Aid Public Relations Manager in promoting DDC programs, enrichment/community programs through phone calls, postal mail, email, etc.
  • Provide supervision of students at all times during the duration of classes and programs, extending to the release of students to guardians.
  • Maintain the highest possible degree of safety inside and outside of the classroom and surrounding building areas.
  • Prepare and distribute weekly and monthly DDC schedules, units, events to staff and parents.
  • Maintain positive communication with program participants, their teachers/parents/guardians, as well as all visitors to the center.

Professional Responsibilities

  • Participate in teacher meetings, all staff meetings, and other assignments.
  • Maintain a Texas teaching certificate in Deaf Education.
  • Coordinate activities for volunteers and substitutes assigned to the classroom.
  • Attend field trips, marketing events, and other school functions throughout the year.

Requirements

  • Texas Certification in Deaf Education.
  • 5+ years in Deaf education or special education setting.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
  • Outstanding interpersonal skills and ability to work effectively as part of a team.
  • Ability to work well under pressure and manage sensitive or controversial subjects with tact, kindness, and professionalism.
