Responsibilities
- Work in partnership with the team teacher to develop weekly lesson plans for preschool children
- Develop and maintain a safe and positive classroom climate and intentional learning environment
- Screen and assess each child using appropriate screening/assessment tools
- Individualize educational plans for each child based on ongoing developmental assessments
- Engage parents of various cultural backgrounds in their child’s education
- Act as the “second in command” of site operations when Site Supervisor is off site, as assigned
- Maintain 100% supervision of all children by sight and sound at all times when in the teacher/child ratio
- Plan high-quality, developmentally appropriate learning experiences with the team teacher
- Carry out a bilingual, multicultural, anti-bias curriculum designed to meet children’s developmental needs within program guidelines
- Develop positive relationships with each child and parent
- Maintain an indoor and outdoor classroom environment consistent with Head Start/Child Development, Licensing, and Agency standards
- Maintain confidentiality of records and information of enrolled families
- Assist children with self-care needs such as tooth brushing, diapering, toileting, hand washing, and wiping noses
- Maintain a physically safe environment and clean, well-organized equipment and learning materials indoors and out
- Attend and contribute to regular staff meetings and curriculum planning meetings
- Plan monthly/weekly curriculum with team teacher that scaffolds children’s development
- Work regularly with the team teacher to plan and evaluate individualization of the curriculum and behavior plans if applicable
- Conduct large group activities three times a week and a small group (primary language) daily
- Plan and carry out transition activities for children entering or leaving the class/center
- Maintain narrative records on each child related to their development
- Complete required paper and electronic records in a timely manner
- Assume responsibility for maintenance of required assessments and screenings
- Attend IEP (Individual Education Plan) meetings for special needs children with consultants, school district personnel, and parents as required
- Attend parent meetings upon request
- Provide daily ongoing communication with parents regarding children’s activities, development, and special needs
- Conduct at least 2 home visits and two parent conferences with each assigned child's family annually, with special efforts to include fathers
- Participate with supervisors and managers in the evaluation and ongoing improvement of the program’s effectiveness
- Carry out responsibilities of staff supervision, licensing requirements, and overall center operations when the Site Supervisor is away from the center
- Consistently use positive child guidance methods
- Be available for pre-arranged evening or weekend home visits, meetings, or special events to meet the needs of working families
- Be aware of all center’s children with food allergies and ensure they receive doctor-recommended substitutions
- Be sensitive to children with special needs
- Function as a positive team member and communicate effectively with families and co-workers
Requirements
- Associate’s Degree in Early Childhood Education/Child Development or a related field (Teacher II) or Bachelor’s Degree or higher with 12 units of Early Childhood Education/Child Development (Teacher III)
- Eligible for a Child Development Teacher permit or higher (Teacher II) or Child Development Master Teacher permit or higher (Teacher III) from California Commission on Teacher Credentialing
- Three semester units in supervised field experience
- One year of experience as an Early Childhood Teacher (Teacher III only)
- Obtain and maintain a current Child Development Permit for position held
- Obtain and maintain a Pediatric First Aid and CPR card
- Successfully complete a pre-employment physical examination
- Obtain tuberculosis clearance and clear Community Care Licensing fingerprint process
- Provide verification of State-required vaccines upon hire for: Influenza (from August 1 to December 1), Pertussis, and Measles (exceptions: Flu can be waived by completing annual waiver)
- Knowledge of Internet software and Word Processing software
