Certified, full-time, 10-month position reporting to the principal.
About the Role
The elementary general music teacher performs instructional work with limited decision-making discretion related to instructing classes in music, band, or orchestra and assists students in developing instrumental techniques and music reading. The role involves carrying out Board of Education policies under the direction of the principal.
Responsibilities
- Adhere to all state, federal, and local laws, policies, and procedures.
- Assist school administration in implementing policies and rules governing student life and conduct.
- Develop reasonable rules of classroom behavior and procedure; maintain order in a fair and just manner.
- Establish and maintain an orderly and supportive classroom environment where students are engaged.
- Create a culture of effectiveness by setting high standards and expectations for all students.
- Plan and implement a music program aligned with the NC Essential Standards for Music, ensuring a sequential course of study.
- Utilize a variety of methods and adapt music instruction to benefit all students.
- Integrate appropriate music technologies into instruction.
- Assess and analyze student work using a variety of methods.
- Utilize a consistent, fair, and supportable grading system.
- Collaborate with other arts staff and classroom teachers for arts integration and curriculum alignment.
- Maintain an accurate inventory of musical equipment and ensure instruments are in playing condition.
- Self-initiate opportunities for professional development and growth.
- Communicate program needs to the principal.
- Collaborate with principals, colleagues, and feeder school music staff to ensure program continuity.
- Seek alternative funding sources to supplement program needs.
- May coordinate field trips.
- Perform related work as assigned or required.
Requirements
- Bachelor’s Degree in Music Education.
- Master’s Degree in Performance or Music Education preferred.
- Valid NC teaching license in the assigned area.
- Equivalent combination of education and experience may be considered.
Skills & Knowledge
- Knowledge of federal, state, and local regulatory requirements, including CMS policies, rules, and regulations, and the CMS Strategic Plan.
- Knowledge of Common Core, NC Essential Standards, and the North Carolina Testing Program (End of Course Testing).
- Knowledge of General Statute 115C of NC State Law concerning Public Education and the Every Student Succeeds Act (ESSA).
- Knowledge of elementary music curriculum principles, standards, and expectations.
- Knowledge of how to utilize data and information to make instructional decisions.
- Knowledge of learning styles, curriculum development, program evaluation, instructional strategies, classroom management, and learning assessment.
- Skilled in verbal and written communication, as well as computer proficiency (Microsoft Office, Google Workspace).
- Ability to learn and use specialized tools, equipment, or software related to business needs.
- Ability to reason, make judgments, and maintain effective working relationships.
- Ability to employ positive communication skills in all settings and mediums.
- Ability to problem-solve using sound judgment and maintain confidentiality.
- Ability to take initiative, work independently, and exercise sound judgment.
- Ability to recognize various learning styles and appropriate levels of intellectual and social development.
- Ability to work effectively in a deadline-driven, rapidly changing team environment.
