We serve 2,200 students across an early childhood center (PreK-K), two elementary schools (grades 1-3 and 4-5), a middle school with a planetarium, a high school with an automotive service center, and a virtual academy. The district employs 350 staff and offers award-winning athletics, marching band, in-house food service, transportation, custodial and maintenance teams, and school-age child care through a local partner.

Responsibilities

  • Provide direct instruction to students on caseload to meet academic and behavioral needs.
  • Develop curriculum, design and implement lesson plans, and assess student progress.
  • Disseminate information to staff, students, and parents regarding student needs, progress, and resources.
  • Serve as a member of the student study team in determining appropriate support and services.
  • Act as case manager for assigned students, ensuring procedural safeguards, mandated timelines, scheduling and conducting meetings to facilitate program effectiveness and placements.
  • Support special education teachers in completing professional responsibilities, including timelines and appropriate services.
  • Mentor and support new staff members in the special education department.
  • Ensure all students are educated in the least restrictive environment while meeting educational needs.
  • Serve as liaison between the district and center programs for resident students.
  • Work closely with building and district administration to ensure students with disabilities are disciplined appropriately.
  • Model and support classroom teachers in educating students with disabilities.
  • Manage IEPs for assigned caseload; coordinate and facilitate IEP meetings; write IEPs and communicate with general education teachers and support staff.
  • Facilitate referral, applications, and eligibility process for students and families.
  • Participate in and lead professional development on best practices.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Requirements

  • Valid Michigan Teaching Certificate required.
  • Special Education Endorsement in SM, SE, SA, or SV preferred.
  • Eligible for or have Michigan Teacher Consultant approval required.
  • Master’s Degree in related field required.
  • Three years of teaching experience; three years in Special Education required.
  • Experience working with diverse student populations.
  • Highly Effective Evaluation preferred.
  • Experience in a Leadership Role preferred.
  • Evidence of exceptional organization skills required.
