About the role

The Special Education Teacher at Three Rivers Treatment Center will play a crucial role in supporting students with emotional, behavioral, and learning disabilities. This position requires a Bachelor's Degree in Special Education or an approved teacher preparation program, a Virginia Teaching License with the appropriate endorsement, and knowledge of special education laws, regulations, and best practices.

Responsibilities

  • Develop and deliver individualized lesson plans aligned with Virginia SOLs.
  • Create a structured, positive, and engaging classroom environment.
  • Implement evidence-based instructional and behavioral strategies.
  • Differentiate instruction to meet students' academic, behavioral, and emotional needs.
  • Participate in the development and implementation of Individualized Education Programs (IEPs) and Individualized Instruction Plans (IIPs).
  • Collaborate with the Director of Educational Services, clinicians, social workers, testing specialists, and residential staff.
  • Maintain accurate educational records and documentation in accordance with state and federal regulations.
  • Communicate regularly with families and other stakeholders regarding student progress.
  • Supervise instructional paraprofessionals assigned to the classroom.
  • Participate as an active member of the multidisciplinary treatment team.
  • Maintain HIPAA and FERPA confidentiality standards.
  • Complete required regulatory and professional development training.

Qualifications

  • Required: Bachelor's Degree in Special Education or an approved teacher preparation program.
  • Required: Hold or be eligible for a Virginia Teaching License with the appropriate endorsement.
  • Preferred: Master's Degree in Education or Special Education.
  • Preferred: Two years of classroom teaching experience.
  • Preferred: Experience working with students with emotional, behavioral, or developmental disabilities.
  • Preferred: Experience in a behavioral health, therapeutic day school, or residential treatment setting.
  • Required: Virginia Collegiate or Postgraduate Professional Teaching License.

Pay

$45,000 annually, plus a $3,000 sign-on bonus payable after 90 days.

Schedule

Full-time position, Monday through Friday, with some evening and weekend responsibilities as needed.

Physical Requirements

Frequently lift up to 10 pounds. Occasionally lift or move 25–50 pounds. Ability to safely assist with student behavioral interventions and crisis situations when necessary, including approved behavioral management techniques.

  • Other required DBHDS, Virginia Department of Education, and facility-specific training within required timeframes.
