About the role
The Teacher at Odyssey House provides direct early childhood educational services to children aged 2 months to 5 years. Responsibilities include creating a safe and learning environment, developing lesson plans, supervising children, communicating with parents, and participating in professional development.
Responsibilities
- Create and maintain an appropriate learning environment fostering physical, social-emotional, and intellectual growth.
- Develop and implement weekly lesson plans based on approved curricula.
- Provide an individualized and culturally diverse learning experience through active involvement in classroom activities.
- Ensure a safe environment by providing close supervision, addressing unsafe areas, and maintaining a clean classroom.
- Address developmental, physical, behavioral, and/or mental health issues through referrals.
- Emphasize positive parent-child relationships through supervision of scheduled parent-child time.
- Plan and execute classroom trips and outings.
- Communicate children’s progress with parents and participate in parent-teacher conferences.
- Daily set up, break down, and clean the classroom.
- Maintain proper inventory of classroom materials and supplies.
- Attend required in-service training seminars, staff meetings, and case conferences.
- Participate in quality improvement activities.
- Perform other relevant duties as assigned.
Requirements
- Bachelor’s degree in Early Childhood Education with New York State Initial Certification in Birth to 2nd Grade, or Master’s degree in Early Childhood Education with New York State Professional Certification, and one year teaching experience.
- CPR/First Aid Certification.
- NYS Central Registry Check and fingerprint clearance.
- Knowledge of NYC Department of Health regulations and codes.
- Proficiency with computer operation (Microsoft Word, Excel, and Outlook).
- Able to lift small children.
- Able to work a flexible schedule.
