Teacher Assistants

About the role

The Greater Somerset County YMCA (GSCY) is seeking qualified Teacher Assistants to join the team at the Hillsborough YMCA in vibrant Somerset County, New Jersey. As a Teacher Assistant, you will support the Head Teacher in implementing a developmentally appropriate curriculum that encourages learning through exploration, discovery, and the development of a positive self-image.

Responsibilities

• Ensure the health, safety, and well-being of children in the program through close supervision of all activities.
• Assist the Head Teacher in creating and leading developmentally appropriate lessons and activities.
• Work as a supportive team member to maintain a positive and inclusive classroom environment.
• Maintain a clean and safe classroom by identifying and addressing potential hazards and setting up spaces to support child learning.
• Maintain accurate program documentation, including incident, accident, and behavior reports, attendance sheets, sign-in/sign-out sheets, and development/growth forms. Document eating, sleeping, and any areas of concern.
• Actively participate in training sessions, meetings, and special events.
• Perform other duties as needed to support the health and well-being of staff and members.
• Follow and maintain sanitary habits in accordance with CDC guidelines.
• Model positive social interactions and language, and implement positive class management techniques.
• Assist with Arts & Crafts projects, conduct “circle time,” and help during lunch/snacks and diapering/potty training (room-specific).

Requirements

• High School diploma.
• Minimum of one year of experience working with young children in a group setting.
• Knowledge of child development and developmentally appropriate practices.
