About the role
The Greater Somerset County YMCA (GSCY) is seeking qualified Teacher Assistants to join the team at the Hillsborough YMCA in vibrant Somerset County, New Jersey. As a Teacher Assistant, you will support the Head Teacher in implementing a developmentally appropriate curriculum that encourages learning through exploration, discovery, and the development of a positive self-image.
Responsibilities
- Ensure the health, safety, and well-being of children in the program through close supervision of all activities.
- Assist the Head Teacher in creating and leading developmentally appropriate lessons and activities.
- Work as a supportive team member to maintain a positive and inclusive classroom environment.
- Maintain a clean and safe classroom by identifying and addressing potential hazards and setting up spaces to support child learning.
- Maintain accurate program documentation, including incident, accident, and behavior reports, attendance sheets, sign-in/sign-out sheets, and development/growth forms. Document eating, sleeping, and any areas of concern.
- Actively participate in training sessions, meetings, and special events.
- Perform other duties as needed to support the health and well-being of staff and members.
- Follow and maintain sanitary habits in accordance with CDC guidelines.
- Model positive social interactions and language, and implement positive class management techniques.
- Assist with Arts & Crafts projects, conduct “circle time,” and help during lunch/snacks and diapering/potty training (room-specific).
Requirements
- High School diploma.
- Minimum of one year of experience working with young children in a group setting.
- Knowledge of child development and developmentally appropriate practices.
