Summary
Under the general supervision of the special education teacher, the special education teacher assistant supports the implementation of student IEPs (Individualized Education Programs) by assisting the teacher in five areas of service: instructional support, management and supervision support, personal support, assessment support, and material management.
Schedule
5.9 hours per day / 174 days per year
Pay
Salary Grade 7 - $20.98 per hour (Support Salary Table 2026-2027). Promotions result in a minimum 5% increase.
Responsibilities
- Provide instructional support to students as outlined in their IEPs
- Assist with management and supervision of students
- Provide personal support to students, which may include lifting, feeding programs, simple sign/signal communication, and medical procedures (e.g., gastrostomy tube feeding, catheterization, and diapering of adult-size students)
- Support assessment activities
- Assist with material management
Requirements
- High school diploma or equivalent education and/or experience
- District in-service training (required after hiring)
- Basic knowledge of academic subjects
- Substitution or equivalent experience preferred
- Specific skills required depend on the assignment, student needs, IEP, and established procedures of the supervising professional
Qualifications
For positions in Title One schools, one of the following is required:
- The equivalent of two years (48 semester hours) of full-time education at an institution of higher education
- An associate's degree
- The ability to pass a Utah State Office of Education approved Para-Professional Test
