About the role
The special education teacher assistant supports the implementation of student IEP's by assisting the teacher in five areas of service: instructional support, management and supervision support, personal support, assessment support, and material management.
Responsibilities
- Assists in providing instructional support to students.
- Supports management and supervision of classroom activities.
- Provides personal support to students as needed.
- Assists in assessments and evaluations of student progress.
- Manages and organizes materials and resources for instruction.
Requirements
- High school diploma or equivalent education and/or experience.
- District in-service training (required after hiring).
- Basic knowledge of academic subjects.
- Substitution or equivalent experience preferred.
Qualifications
- The specific skills required of the assistant depend upon the assignment, the student's needs, and IEP, and upon the established procedures of the supervising professional.
Skills
- Ability to work with students with various disabilities.
- Knowledge of educational strategies and techniques.
- Ability to communicate effectively with students, parents, and teachers.
- Physical ability to perform tasks such as lifting, feeding programs, simple sign/signal communication, and medical procedures.
