About the role
The special education teacher assistant supports the implementation of student IEPs by assisting the teacher in five areas of service: instructional support, management and supervision support, personal support, assessment support, and material management.
Responsibilities
- Assists in the implementation of student IEPs
- Provides instructional support
- Maintains classroom management and supervision
- Offers personal support to students
- Supports assessments and evaluations
- Manages and organizes educational materials
Requirements
- High school diploma or equivalent
- District in-service training (required after hiring)
- Basic knowledge of academic subjects
- Substitution or equivalent experience preferred
- Specific skills vary based on assignment, student needs, and IEP requirements
- For Title One schools: Equivalent of two years full-time education at an institution of higher education or an associate's degree, or passing a Utah State Office of Education approved Para-Professional Test
Qualifications
- High school diploma or equivalent

Skills
- Ability to work under the supervision of a special education teacher
- Knowledge of academic subjects
- Basic understanding of educational procedures

Benefits
- Salary Grade 8 - $22.03 per hour (Support Salary Table 2026-2027)
- Promotions result in a minimum 5% increase
- May require lifting, feeding programs, simple sign/signal communication, and medical procedures such as gastrostomy tube feeding, catheterization, and diapering of adult size students
