Teacher Assistant, Early Head Start
About the role
Join CommUnify’s team by becoming an Early Head Start Teacher Assistant! Under the supervision of a Site Supervisor, assists classroom Teachers in providing for the responsive care and education of children ages six (6) weeks to thirty-six (36) months in an Agency Early Head Start center.
Responsibilities
- Maintains 100% supervision of all children, by sight and sound at all times.
- Consistently uses positive child guidance methods.
- Assists caregivers in planning and carrying out curriculum for children ages twelve (12) weeks to thirty-six (36) months.
- Assists children with toileting, diapering and/or feeding and other physical care needs.
- Maintains the confidentiality of records and information about enrolled families.
- Mets on a regular (daily/weekly) basis with the caregiving staff to plan activities to meet the needs of the children in the program.
- Attends and contributes to regular staff meetings and curriculum planning meetings.
- Helps to maintain a clean, organized, and sanitary classroom environment.
- Helps to implement the curriculum under teacher direction, including small group, field trips, mealtimes, and one on one activities with children.
- Assists in setting up meal preparation, mealtimes, and helps with clean up.
- Works with individual children or groups of children on activities as assigned.
- Contributes to child observations and ongoing assessment.
- Assists with children during indoor, outdoors and on field trips as assigned, under the supervision of a caregiver.
- Set up cots/mats for nap time and assists children during napping.
- Attends parent meetings and home visits when requested.
- Develops positive relationships with each child and with parents.
- Aware of all center’s children with food allergies, and ensures they receive the doctor recommended substitutions.
- Sensitive to children with special needs.
- Functions as a positive team member. Communicates effectively with families and co-workers.
Qualifications
- Child Development Teacher Assistant Permit or higher from California Commission on Teacher Credentialing
- 6 units in infant/toddler development required; new hires may complete after hire by enrolling in infant/ toddler development coursework within 3 months of hire and must successfully complete 6 units of infant/toddler development coursework within one year of hire.
- Computer Skills: Knowledge of Internet software; and Word Processing software.
- Certificates, Licenses, Registrations: Obtain and maintain a current Child Development Permit for position held. Must obtain and maintain a Pediatric First Aid and CPR card.
Skills
- Bilingual (English/Spanish) highly desired.

Pay
Position is full-time with full benefits. Starts out between $18.00 - $19.00 per hour depending on how many Early Childhood Education units you have completed.
Schedule
Position is located at the Goleta Early Head Start Center. This positions also has a $5,000 hiring incentive, paid in two (2) installments at the completion of the following employment milestones: After 90 calendar days of employment, $2,500 paid in the sixth payroll after hire AND after 180 calendar days of employment, $2,500 paid in the twelfth payroll after hire.
