Teacher Assistant
About the role
St. John's Lutheran ECEC in Alexandria, VA is seeking a Teacher Assistant to support the Lead Teacher and Director in a faith-based program environment. This position requires no formal credential but expects relevant experience.
Responsibilities
- Supervise the classroom, according to the plans of the lead teacher when the lead teacher is out or otherwise occupied.
- Help with daily activities, such as meals, small and large group activities, nap time, music and movement, art, outdoor play, and bathroom needs.
- Aid in record keeping of daily student activities and observations related to children's development.
- Implement developmentally appropriate activities based on children's interests and needs under the direction of the Lead Teacher and the Director.
- Support children in regulating their behavior using a Christ-centered positive consistent approach.
- Assist the Lead Teacher in implementing the daily program by treating each child with dignity and respect, recognizing individual needs, helping the children to think creatively, solve problems independently, and respect themselves and others.
- Establish relationships with each family to ensure their student's needs are met and maintained daily.
- Aid the Lead Teacher in ensuring classroom bulletin boards are updated with lesson plans, activity calendars, and meal schedules for parents.
Requirements
- Previous experience in childcare.
- Ability to stand, bend, and sit for long periods of time and lift up to 50 lbs as needed.
- Enthusiastic supporter of Christian mission.
- Excellent interpersonal and communication skills with SJLC and ECEC staff, board members, and families.
- Passionate for Early Childhood Education.
- Able to work cooperatively in a team setting.
- Able to adapt to changing conditions and needs.
Nice to have
- Child Development Associate (CDA) or college classes in Early Childhood Education, Child Development, Elementary Education, or Early Childhood Special Education.
- Active membership in a Christian congregation or willingness to join.
