About the Role

Under general supervision of a certified teacher or school administrator, a Teacher Aide performs non-instructional duties to assist certified teachers in a classroom setting. This role relieves teachers of routine duties related to the learning process that can be performed by non-professional personnel. The position may include one-on-one assistance for students with special needs. Duties differ from those of a School Monitor due to the more complex nature of assignments, which may require specific skills or abilities.

Responsibilities

  • Assists teachers with non-instructional tasks such as checking homework or examination papers, averaging grades, checking attendance, collecting money, preparing charts, making lists, maintaining classroom files, and operating duplicating machines.
  • Provides physical aid to teachers, including maintaining bulletin boards, making posters, obtaining and returning reference materials, distributing supplies, setting up audio-visual, computer, television, and laboratory presentations.
  • Assists with personal physical care for individual children, such as clothing, feeding, wash-up, and bathroom needs.
  • Helps proctor and administer examinations.
  • May work one-on-one with children with disabilities, assisting with note-taking, mobility, personal care, and accompanying students on school buses.
  • Assists students with disabilities in using technology and adaptive equipment to facilitate learning, mobility, and communication.
  • Maintains order and discipline in the classroom, hallways, lunchrooms, or other areas in the temporary absence of the teacher.

Requirements

  • Graduation from high school or possession of a high school equivalency diploma.
  • Experience working with children.
  • Fingerprint clearance.
  • Completion of required State Workshops on Child Abuse, School Safety, and Dignity for All Students.
  • Approval by the Westchester Department of Civil Services.

Skills & Abilities

  • Working knowledge of classroom routines and technology used in a classroom setting.
  • Ability to establish good working relationships with students, parents, school personnel, and the public.
  • Ability to maintain discipline and follow oral and written instructions.
  • Effective communication skills, including reading, writing, speaking, and understanding English.
  • Clerical aptitude, good judgment, resourcefulness, tact, courtesy, and dependability.
  • Physical condition commensurate with the duties of the position.

Pay

Salary range: $17.79 - $30.49 per hour.
