About the role
The Teacher Aide/Bus Monitor assists with the supervision, development, and implementation of program activities and functions, supports staff and parent volunteers, enforces rules and regulations to ensure the health and safety of children in the program.
Responsibilities
- Report to work Monday through Friday from 7:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m., with possible adjustments based on supervisor authorization and executive director approval.
- Accompany children on scheduled bus routes daily to ensure their safety.
- Implement guidance techniques appropriate to the child's developmental level.
- Create a warm and accepting environment for children and parents.
- Avoid gossip and inappropriate labeling; refrain from discussing children disparagingly in front of other children.
- Establish nurturing bonds with children and support parents in their role as primary educators.
- Participate in curriculum preparation and classroom maintenance.
- Maintain health and safety standards by assisting in daily and weekly classroom cleaning.
- Sanitize all surfaces, equipment, and classroom toys.
- Design and complete classroom bulletin boards, hallway displays, and other venues that support sharing classroom activities.
- Complete necessary paperwork for classroom activities, such as meal count sheets, attendance, screenings, parent/teacher conferences, and home visits.
- Maintain up-to-date and accurate education child files, including complete incident reports, permission slips, and child portfolios.
- Manage classroom supply lists and inventory.
- Observe children for any suspected or disclosed signs of child abuse or neglect and report observations to the center director or person in charge.
- Communicate with parents/families with respect, sensitivity to everyone's rights, strengths, needs, and cultural/socio-economic background.
- Visit each child's home twice a year as indicated on the planning calendar to meet parents or guardians and become familiar with the child's family and home environment.
- Participate in professional development and educational staff meetings, staff in-services, and other training opportunities provided by OTHS/EHS.
- Engage in continuing education and professional development opportunities to meet required qualifications.
Qualifications
- Can enroll in a Child Development Associate Credential (CDA) program and complete the CDA program within 1 year, or must have a current CDA and be able to complete an Associate degree in Early Childhood Education within 1 year, and one year experience working with pre-school age children in a classroom setting.
- Associate degree or Baccalaureate degree in Early Childhood Education or related field, and one year experience working with pre-school age children in a classroom setting.
- Pass a physical exam.
- Must possess a valid driver's license.
- Must become First Aid/CPR certified.
