Teacher Aide
About the Role
The Education Paraprofessional (Para) assists fellow education staff in providing instructional and behavioral support to students. Each Para mentors students, participates in curriculum planning and implementation, and helps set the tone for a conducive learning environment. The role involves implementing teacher-directed lesson plans, adhering to the positive behavior program, and supporting staff and students as needed.
Work hours are 7:00 AM to 3:30 PM on all instructional days in the dorm, including assisting students with morning routines, breakfast, and escorting them to school. Hours may change as the census increases. The Para follows the School Calendar, including attendance on teacher workdays.
Responsibilities
- Delivers instructional and behavioral guidance as required in IEPs, ISPs, and BIPs.
- Executes lesson plans provided by teachers; may substitute teach and tutor as assigned.
- Implements and adheres to LRA's Positive Behavior Program, promoting respect and discipline.
- Enforces classroom rules and BIP expectations; provides feedback to teachers on student work.
- Holds students accountable for behavior in all locations while maintaining appropriate boundaries.
- Responds promptly to requests from students or team members; listens and clarifies needs.
- Fosters an inclusive and safe learning environment conducive to student learning.
- Contributes suggestions to teachers for instructional lesson plans.
- Assists in preparing progress reports for referral sources and parents.
- Supports students during Speech, Occupational Therapy, off-campus trips, and other services.
- Works one-on-one with designated students as needed.
- Complies with updated policies and procedures; reports violations to supervisors.
- Maintains confidentiality and professionalism as a representative of LRA.
- Follows safety regulations and suggests improvements when necessary.
- Pursues continuous professional growth to enhance student and personal performance.
- Uses IEP, ISP, and BIP objectives in planning instructional, recreation, and residential activities.
- Completes documentation within specified timeframes.
- Supports and promotes LRA values of diversity, equity, and inclusion.
- Greets visitors, parents, and reviewers with respect and professionalism.
- Models ethical behavior in resolving misunderstandings, disagreements, and conflicts.
- Responds positively to reasonable requests to perform other duties.
Requirements
- High School Diploma or GED; Bachelor’s degree preferred.
- Utah State Paraeducator Certificate required (or agreement to complete the certification process).
- Experience working with adolescents.
- Knowledge of human behavior, social interactions, and psychology is beneficial.
- Strong oral and written communication skills.
- Excellent interpersonal skills with staff and students.
- Must be 21 years or older.
Physical Demands
- Trained and able to safely manage student behaviors, including hands-on intervention when required.
- Frequent and clear verbal and written communication with team members.
- Short periods of running.
- Possible physical restraining of escalated students.
- Able to bend, stand, stoop, or sit for long periods.
- Lift and carry up to 50 lbs.
- Push or pull up to 100 lbs.
Pay
$17.00 per hour.
Schedule
7:00 AM to 3:30 PM, at least 2 times per week.
