Location: Nashville, TN – Department of Environment & Conservation, Davidson County

Full-time position with a monthly salary range of $5,647.00 - $7,326.00 (annually $67,764.00 - $87,912.00).

Qualifications

Education and Experience:

  • Bachelor’s or higher degree in environmental science, physical sciences (e.g., physics, chemistry, geology, meteorology), ecology, sustainability or applied science in sustainability, life sciences (e.g., biology, microbiology, health physics or biophysics), environmental health, pre-medicine, engineering, or other acceptable science or natural resource-related field.
  • Four years of full-time professional experience in environmental program work, natural resource conservation, or ensuring compliance with radiation safety standards and/or environmental regulations.

Substitution of Education for Experience:

  • Graduate coursework in the specified fields may substitute for experience on a year-for-year basis (24 semester hours = 1 year), up to a maximum of two years.

Substitution of a Specific Bachelor’s Degree for Experience:

  • A bachelor’s degree in health physics or nuclear engineering may substitute for one year of required experience in the Division of Radiological Health.

Necessary Special Qualifications:

  • Valid motor vehicle operator’s license required at the time of appointment for some positions.

Responsibilities

  • Oversee direct reports in a moderate to large program or section, including performance reviews, task assignments, and adherence to agency policies and procedures.
  • Provide technical and managerial support for environmental inspections, complaint investigations, remediation, monitoring, and compliance evaluations.
  • Develop or direct staff to develop corrective action recommendations and initiate enforcement actions to ensure compliance with environmental laws and regulations.
  • Review, analyze, and interpret technical information (e.g., permits, reports, operational plans) for accuracy and compliance with standards and regulations.
  • Prepare or oversee the preparation of technical documents and maintain data/databases in accordance with agency requirements.
  • Recruit, interview, and assist in hiring employees while adhering to preferred services rules.
  • Encourage team development, coaching, and mentoring to improve staff knowledge and skills.
  • Develop or revise rules, regulations, policies, and standard operating procedures (SOPs) based on research and evaluation studies.
  • Provide consultative support to stakeholders on regulatory interpretations, environmental stewardship, and safety practices.
  • Assist with budget adherence, fee program management, purchase requests, and fiscal reporting.
  • Oversee state and federal grant loan programs, including planning, fieldwork, reporting, and public outreach.

Pay

Monthly salary range: $5,647.00 - $7,326.00 (annually $67,764.00 - $87,912.00).

Requirements

  • Valid driver’s license with a clean driving record (no DUI, reckless driving, or more than 4 moving violations in the past five years). Exceptions may apply based on agency discretion.
