About the role

TAX TECHNICIAN, GRADE 60 – The Wilkes County Tax Department has an opening for a position responsible for both tax collection and property listing duties.

Responsibilities

• Take the necessary steps to collect taxes, including delinquent property taxes, in accordance with State laws governing these activities — such as taking payments, handling mail, balancing the drawer, and, when needed, garnishing wages and attaching bank accounts.
• Prepare listing forms and assist the public with listing personal property.
• Provide general information to the public on tax laws and policies.
• Prepare tax abstract books and records.
• Work in the NC Vehicle Tax System to maintain motor vehicle values and situs, value personal property, and administer tax exemption programs for the elderly, disabled citizens, and veterans.

Requirements

• Graduation from a two-year college and 1–3 years of experience in accounting, banking, business administration, or a related field, or an equivalent combination of training and experience.
• Considerable customer service experience is required; experience in tax assessment is desirable.
• Knowledge of general accounting principles, money handling, and modern office practices and procedures, including computer operations and applications related to property listings and assessment, and 10-key calculator proficiency.
• Certification as a Personal Property Appraiser must be obtained within a 2-year period.
• Possession of a valid NC driver’s license and a background check are required.

Pay

Hiring rate: $34,594.00, commensurate with qualifications.
