Tax Specialist - Filing

About the role
We are seeking a Tax Specialist I to join our Tax Filing Team. This team supports all facets of the organization, including Sales, Implementation, Client Service, and Finance. Annually, Paylocity’s Tax Services department handles tax deposits exceeding $40 billion and files one million tax returns. The Tax Filing Service specifically manages tax deposits exceeding $12 billion and files 300,000 tax returns each year.
This is a 100% in-office role based at our Schaumburg, IL; Rochester, NY; or Lake Mary, FL locations. Remote or hybrid work is not available. Candidates must be able to work on-site five days per week during designated work hours.
Responsibilities
- Support preparation and filing of quarterly and annual tax returns with state and local tax agencies
- Support the preparation and filing of amended quarterly and annual returns with state and local tax agencies
- Prepare data exchanges with tax agencies
- Maintain systems with accurate deposit frequency, rates, EINs, and payment method
- Identify error trends and report to the Tax Filing Manager
- Communicate effectively, internally and externally, regarding tax issues
- Work with internal departments to answer clients’ questions about tax issues
- Correspond with and build relationships with state tax agencies
- Communicate basic taxation information to internal partners managing client relationships
- Stay updated on the latest tax regulations and policies
- Seek new opportunities to improve the quality of filings for clients
Requirements
- Minimum one to two years’ experience in payroll
- Minimum one to two years’ experience in tax or a related field
- Bachelor’s degree required
- Intermediate to advanced Excel knowledge
- Strong communication and problem-solving skills
- High level of integrity
Preferred Qualifications
- Experience with Enterprise Employment Tax Software Tools
- Experience as a Payroll Practitioner for a large company
- Payroll service bureau experience
- Certified Payroll Professional (CPP) or progress toward certification
- Experience in a high-volume payroll tax department
