Tax Specialist
About the role
The Personal Property Tax & State and Local Tax (SALT) Specialist is responsible for preparing, reviewing, and filing personal property tax returns and other state and local tax filings across multiple jurisdictions. This role also administers tax abatements and incentive programs by identifying opportunities, preparing applications, and ensuring ongoing compliance with program requirements. The specialist ensures all filings are accurate, timely, and compliant with applicable state and local tax regulations.
Responsibilities
- Prepare, review, and file personal property tax returns, including asset listings, valuations, reconciliations, and supporting schedules.
- Maintain tax compliance calendars and ensure all filing deadlines are met.
- Reconcile tax accounts to the general ledger and investigate discrepancies or variances.
- Research state and local tax laws, regulations, and jurisdictional filing requirements.
- Partner with Accounting, Finance, Fixed Assets, and other internal departments to obtain information necessary for tax filings.
- Identify process improvement opportunities to enhance the efficiency and accuracy of tax compliance activities.
Abatements & Incentives
- Identify eligibility for tax abatements, exemptions, and incentives.
- Prepare and submit abatement applications and supporting documentation.
- Track and manage compliance with abatement agreements (reporting, deadlines, renewals).
- Coincide with internal departments and external agencies regarding abatement programs.
- Support audits related to abatement claims and tax filings.
- Aid in state and local tax audits, including data gathering and response preparation.
- Maintain documentation to support filings and positions taken.
- Monitor changes in tax legislation and assess impact on the organization.
- Aid in implementing process changes resulting from new tax laws or business initiatives.
- Prepare and file miscellaneous state and local tax returns, including:
- Nevada Modified Business Tax (MBT)
- Nevada Commerce Tax
- Ohio Commercial Activity Tax (CAT)
Requirements
- Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, or related field.
- 1+ years of experience personal property and other misc tax compliance.
- Strong Accounting background.
- Direct experience with tax abatements or incentive programs strongly preferred.
- Strong understanding of multi-state tax regulations and filing requirements.
- Strong understanding of General Ledger and Accounts Reconciliation.
- Advanced Excel skills & Experience with SAP S4/HANA.
