About the role
The Senior Tax Manager provides tax and consulting services to business clients with pass through entities and their business owners. This includes performing tax planning, preparation, and research for S-corps, LLCs, Partnerships, and individual returns, managing client engagements, and ensuring compliance with all applicable authorities.
Responsibilities
- Performs tax planning, preparation, and research for pass through entities and individual returns
- Manages client engagements, supervises and reviews work of team staff members, and works closely with clients and internal managers
- Contributes to client satisfaction by providing timely services and work product
- Demonstrates an understanding of tax concepts and actively pursues increased tax knowledge through client assignments and current tax developments
- Tax Compliance: Ensures clients comply with all applicable authorities while minimizing their tax and reporting burdens, and ensures self and client service teams comply with Firm policies and the BDO Tax Quality Manual
- Timely billing, including management of out-of-scope activity and communication to clients
- Timely collection of accounts receivable
- Manages client relationships and expectations in accordance with the project
- Provides advice to clients in a timely manner and conducts top-level review of tax returns and resolves issues with clients, involving specialists as necessary
- Plans and reviews the tax process, budgets and staffs, monitors engagement process, and reviews actual time incurred vs. budget with assistance of Senior
- Manages workload of associates and senior associates, schedules workload, and provides verbal and written performance feedback
- Strategic Development: Introduces and develops new or improved ideas to improve the position of clients, the Firm, or Firm personnel, e.g., by reducing taxes or expenses or providing non-tax benefits
- Reviews studies of tax implications and offers clients alternative courses of action
- Identifies and leverages lessons learned on prior projects and offers input on how to improve processes and methods
- Other duties as required
Requirements
- Eight (8) or more years of prior relevant tax experience and/or public accounting, private industry accounting or consulting/professional services experience, required
- Specifically, experience with working on individual, estate, trust, partnership, S-corporation, and private foundation tax/consulting clients
- Prior supervisory experience, required
- CPA certification, Attorney (admitted to practice in a U.S. jurisdiction), or Internal Revenue Service Enrolled Agent (“EA”) (or the equivalent of one of these designations), required
- Possession of other professional degrees or certifications applicable to role, preferred
Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree, required; major in Accounting, Finance, Economics or Statistics, preferred
- Master’s degree in Accounting or Taxation, preferred
