About the role

The Core Tax Services Senior Manager is responsible for advising clients on the tax implications of their business objectives, evaluating and selecting alternative actions to lessen tax burden and cost of compliance, identifying different methods of complying with tax regulations while acting as the primary client contact for complex tax issues. In this role, the Senior Manager is charged with applying knowledge to understand potential tax issues, recognizing and communicating potential risks and potential changes in tax policy, and making top-level decisions regarding filing, preparation, and resolution of questions from federal and state agencies. The Senior Manager will be a critical member of the office/region leadership team and actively participate in marketing, networking, and business development within an area of expertise and specialization while maintaining client relationships and acting as the primary contact for complex questions.

Responsibilities

  • Ensure clients comply with all applicable authorities while minimizing their tax and reporting burdens, and ensure self and client service teams comply with all Firm policies, standards, and the BDO Tax Quality Manual
  • Conduct top-level review of tax returns and resolve all tax issues with clients; involve specialists where appropriate
  • Plan for early recognition of material tax and compliance issues and consult with client and/or partner as appropriate
  • Identify when research is needed; clearly frame issues for research and report analysis; identify complex issues for the engagement team and provide research methodology; train managers and staff on research skills
  • Correctly and proactively apply Firm policies, standards, and the BDO Tax Quality Manual regarding ASC 740 (FAS 109 and FIN 48); help others learn and apply these standards; review tax provisions and prepared workpapers; explain components of the income tax provision and uncertain tax positions to clients
  • Assist with developing and implementing efficient methods to maximize client benefits, especially by decreasing current and future taxes; recommend solutions combining tax knowledge with business/industry insight; confer with STS specialists when appropriate
  • Monitor implementation of work plans for tax consulting projects; manage written and phone inquiries from federal and state agencies; provide effective assistance with protests at the appeals level
  • Develop in-depth understanding of technical and practical issues regarding one or more areas of taxation; may organize and conduct external CPE training sessions in area of specialization at least once per year; train and mentor managers, seniors, and associates on specialization areas
  • Introduce and develop new or improved ideas to improve client positions; research and implement tax strategies; make suggestions for improving work products or approaches; present complex strategies to clients and prospective clients
  • Supervise associates and senior associates on all projects; review their work and provide feedback; train them on software tools; act as Career Advisor; schedule and manage workloads; provide verbal and written performance feedback
  • Perform other duties as required

Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree required; major in Accounting, Finance, Economics, or Statistics preferred; Master's in Accountancy or Taxation preferred
  • Eight (8) or more years of prior relevant tax experience and/or public accounting, private industry accounting, or consulting/professional services experience required
  • Industry expertise in one or more tax specialty preferred
  • Prior supervisory experience required
  • CPA certification, Attorney (admitted to practice in a U.S. jurisdiction), or Internal Revenue Service Enrolled Agent (EA) required (or equivalent)
  • Possession of other professional degrees or certifications applicable to role preferred

Pay

  • California Range: $146,000 – $200,000
  • Colorado Range: $165,000 – $180,000
  • Illinois Range: $140,000 – $190,000
  • Maryland Range: $150,000 – $180,000
  • Massachusetts Range: $150,000 – $206,000
  • Minnesota Range: $130,000 – $190,000
  • New Jersey Range: $155,000 – $200,000
  • Ohio Range: $125,000 – $200,000
  • NYC/Long Island/Westchester Range: $180,000 – $225,000
  • Washington Range: $158,400 – $215,400
  • Washington DC Range: $162,000 – $190,000
