Tax Senior Manager, Core Tax Services

About the role

The Core Tax Services Senior Manager advises clients on tax implications, evaluates alternative actions to reduce tax burden, identifies compliance methods, and acts as the primary client contact for complex tax issues. This role involves applying knowledge to recognize and communicate potential risks, making decisions about filings and resolutions, and participating in business development activities.

Responsibilities

  • Tax Compliance
    • Ensures client compliance with applicable authorities while minimizing tax and reporting burdens.
    • Conducts top-level review of tax returns and resolves issues with clients; involves specialists as necessary.
    • Plans for early recognition of material tax and compliance issues and consults with clients and partners as needed.
    • Identifies and conducts research on complex issues; provides research methodology for efficient processes.
    • Trains managers/staff on research skills and helps frame tax issues for analysis.
    • Applies ASC 740, FAS 109, and FIN 48; reviews tax provisions and explains income tax provisions and uncertain tax positions.
    • Monitors implementation of work plans for tax consulting projects and ensures efficient execution.
    • Manages inquiries from federal and state agencies and assists with protests at the appeals level.
    • Implements Firm strategies and manages client expectations.
  • Tax Consulting
    • Develops and recommends methods to maximize client benefits, especially by decreasing taxes.
    • Works with STS specialists to determine applicability of STS consulting specialties and involves STS when appropriate.
    • Maintains client relationships and acts as the primary contact for complex questions.
  • Tax Specialization
    • Develops in-depth understanding of one or more areas of taxation, such as individual, corporate, property, sales, corporate, pass-through, state and local, international, expatriate, transfer pricing, credits and incentives, compensation and benefits, accounting methods, R&D tax benefits.
    • Organizes and conducts effective external CPE training sessions in area of specialization, involving Firm specialists, at least once per year.
    • Trains and mentors managers/seniors/associates on specialization areas.
  • Strategy Development
    • Introduces and develops new or improved ideas to improve client, Firm, or Firm personnel positions.
    • Researches and implements tax strategies, including experimenting with promising new strategies and ideas.
    • Makes suggestions for improving previous work products or approaches.
    • Presents complex strategies to clients and prospective clients.

    Requirements

    • Bachelor's degree in Accounting, Finance, Economics, or Statistics, or Master's in Accountancy or Taxation preferred.
    • Eight (8) or more years of relevant tax experience and/or public accounting, private industry accounting, or consulting/professional services experience.
    • Industry expertise in one or more tax specialties preferred.
    • Prior supervisory experience required.
    • CPA certification, Attorney (admitted to practice in a U.S. jurisdiction), or Internal Revenue Service Enrolled Agent (or the equivalent of one of these designations) required.
    • Proficient with Microsoft Office Suite and tax research databases/compliance process software.
    • Superior verbal and written communication skills, strong analytical, research, and critical thinking skills, and decision-making abilities.
    • Capable of working well in a team environment and developing and managing a team of tax professionals.
    • Ability to compose written tax advice and develop and maintain client relationships.

    Qualifications

    • Education: Bachelor's degree in Accounting, Finance, Economics, or Statistics, or Master's in Accountancy or Taxation preferred.
    • Experience: Eight (8) or more years of relevant tax experience and/or public accounting, private industry accounting, or consulting/professional services experience.
    • Industry Expertise: Industry expertise in one or more tax specialties preferred.
    • Supervisory Experience: Prior supervisory experience required.
    • Licenses/Certifications: CPA certification, Attorney (admitted to practice in a U.S. jurisdiction), or Internal Revenue Service Enrolled Agent (or the equivalent of one of these designations) required.
    • Software Proficiency: Proficient with Microsoft Office Suite and tax research databases/compliance process software.
    • Other Skills: Superior verbal and written communication skills, strong analytical, research, and critical thinking skills, and decision-making abilities.
