Tax Compliance
- Ensures clients comply with all applicable authorities while minimizing tax and reporting burdens.
- Responsible for self and client service teams adhering to Firm policies, standards, and the BDO Tax Quality Manual.
- Conducts top-level review of T/R and resolves all tax issues with the client, involving specialists as necessary.
- Plans for early recognition of material tax and compliance issues and consults with the client and/or partner as needed.
- Identifies when research is needed and clearly frames issues to be researched, reporting the analysis.
- Trains managers/staff on research skills and helps frame tax issues for efficient research processes.
- Involved in firm specialists' work to ensure proper application of ASC 740 and Firm policies, standards, and BDO TQM.
- Reviews tax provisions, applying in-depth knowledge of ASC 740 if applicable, and reviews prepared workpapers.
- Explains and discusses with the client components of the income tax provision and uncertain tax positions, as well as other complexities surrounding ASC 740.
Tax Consulting
- Assists in developing, recommending, and implementing methods to maximize client benefits, especially by decreasing taxes.
- Applies tax knowledge and business/industry knowledge to recommend solutions, managing risk.
- Communicates with STS specialists to determine applicability of STS consulting specialties to each client, involving STS when appropriate.
- Maintains and monitors implementation of work plans for tax consulting projects to ensure efficient and effective execution.
- Provides effective assistance with protests at the appeals level and implements applicable Firm strategies.
Tax Specialization
- Develops an in-depth understanding of technical and practical issues and opportunities regarding one or more areas of taxation, such as individual, corporate, property, sales, corporate, pass-through, state and local, international, expatriate, transfer pricing, credits and incentives, compensation and benefits, accounting methods, R&D tax benefits.
Strategy Development
- Introduces and develops new or improved ideas to improve client, Firm, or Firm personnel positions, such as reducing taxes or expenses or providing non-tax benefits.
- Researches and implements tax strategies, including experimenting with promising new strategies and ideas.
- Makes suggestions for improving previous work products or approaches.
- Presents complex strategies to clients and prospective clients.
Supervisory Responsibilities
- Supervises associates and senior associates on all projects.
- Reviews work prepared by associates and senior associates and provides review comments.
- Trains associates and seniors on using all current software tools.
- Acts as a Career Advisor to associates and senior associates.
- Schedules and manages workload of associates and senior associates.
- Provides verbal and written performance feedback to associates and senior associates.
Education Qualifications, Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
- Bachelor's degree required; major in Accounting, Finance, Economics, or Statistics preferred.
- Master's in Accountancy or Taxation preferred.
- Eight (8) or more years of prior relevant tax experience and/or public accounting, private industry accounting, or consulting/professional services experience required.
- Industry expertise in one or more tax specialty preferred.
- Prior supervisory experience required.
- CPA certification, Attorney (admitted to practice in a U.S. jurisdiction), or Internal Revenue Service Enrolled Agent ("EA") (or the equivalent of one of these designations) required.
- Possession of other professional degrees or certifications applicable to role preferred.
- Software proficient with the Microsoft Office Suite preferred.
- Experience with tax research databases and tax compliance process software preferred.
