Tax Senior Manager, Core Tax Services
About the role
The Core Tax Services Senior Manager is responsible for advising clients on the tax implications of their business objectives, evaluating and selecting alternative actions to lessen tax burden and cost of compliance, identifying different methods of complying with tax regulations while acting as the primary client contact for complex tax issues. In this role, the Core Tax Services Senior Manager is charged with applying knowledge to understand potential tax issues, recognizing and communicating potential risks and potential changes in tax policy, and making top-level decisions regarding filing, preparation and resolution of questions from federal/state agencies. Additionally, the Core Tax Services Senior Manager will be a critical member of the office/region leadership team and actively participate in marketing, networking and business development within an area of expertise and specialization while maintaining client relationships and acting as the primary contact for complex questions.
Responsibilities
- Tax Compliance: Ensure both that clients comply with all applicable authorities while minimizing their tax and reporting burdens, and that self and client service teams comply with all Firm policies, standards, and the BDO Tax Quality Manual (TQM). Conduct top level review of T/R and resolve all tax issues with clients; involve specialists where appropriate. Plan for early recognition of material tax and compliance issues and consult with the client and/or partner as appropriate.
- Research: Identify when research is needed; clearly and concisely frame issues to be researched and report the analysis. Identify complex issues to be researched by engagement team and provide research methodology for efficient research process. Train managers/staff on research skills and help appropriately frame tax issues for analysis. Involve firm specialists as appropriate.
- ASC 740 (FAS 109 and FIN 48) Tax Accruals: Correctly and proactively apply Firm policies, standards, and the BDO Tax Quality Manual (TQM) regarding FAS 109 and FIN 48. Apply ASC 740 and Firm policies, standards, and BDO TQM regarding them. Help others learn and apply ASC 740 and Firm policies, standards, and BDO TQM regarding them. Review tax provisions – apply in-depth knowledge of ASC 740 if applicable to practice work. Review prepared workpapers. Explain and discuss with clients the components of the income tax provision and uncertain tax positions as well as other complexities surrounding ASC 740.
- Tax Consulting: Assist with developing, recommending, and implementing efficient and effective methods to maximize client benefits, especially by decreasing clients' current and future taxes. Apply the combination of tax knowledge and knowledge of business/industry to recommend solutions. Maximize client benefits, especially by decreasing client taxes, while managing risk. Confer with STS specialists to determine applicability of STS consulting specialties to each client; involve STS when appropriate. Monitor implementation of work plans (client service plan) if applicable for tax consulting projects to ensure they are efficiently and effectively conducted. Manage written or phone inquiries from federal and state agencies with little or no assistance. Provide effective assistance with protests at the appeals level. Implement applicable Firm strategies. Manage client expectations.
- Tax Specialization: Develop an in-depth understanding of the technical and practical issues and opportunities regarding one or more areas of taxation (e.g., individual, corporate, property, sales, pass-through, state and local, international, expatriate, transfer pricing, credits and incentives, compensation and benefits, accounting methods, R&D tax benefits). May be required to organize and conduct, or participate in conducting, effective external CPE training sessions in area of specialization, involving Firm specialists, at a minimum of once per year. May train and mentor managers/seniors/associates on specialization areas.
- Strategy Development: Introduce and develop new or improved ideas to improve the position of clients, the Firm, or Firm personnel (e.g., by reducing taxes or expenses or providing non-tax benefits). Research and implement tax strategies, including experimentation with promising new strategies and ideas. Consistently make suggestions as to how previous work products or approaches can be improved. May lead marketing campaigns, if applicable to role. Present complex strategies to clients and prospective clients.
- Supervisory Responsibilities: Supervise associates and senior associates on all projects. Review work prepared by associates and senior associates and provide review comments. Train Associates and Seniors how to use all current software tools. Act as a Career Advisor to associates and senior associates. Schedule and manage workload of associates and senior associates. Provide verbal and written performance feedback to associates and senior associates.
- Other duties as required.
Qualifications
- Bachelor's degree required; major in Accounting, Finance, Economics or Statistics preferred. Master's in Accountancy or Taxation preferred.
- Eight (8) or more years of prior relevant tax experience and/or public accounting, private industry accounting or consulting/professional services experience required.
- Industry expertise in one or more tax specialty preferred.
- Prior supervisory experience required.
- CPA certification, Attorney (admitted to practice in a U.S. jurisdiction), or Internal Revenue Service Enrolled Agent (EA) (or the equivalent of one of these designations) required. Possession of other professional degrees or certifications applicable to role preferred.
- Proficient with Microsoft Office Suite preferred. Experience with tax research databases and tax compliance process software preferred.

Pay
Individual salaries offered are determined after consideration of numerous factors including but not limited to the candidate's qualifications, experience, skills, and geography.

- Illinois Range: $140,000 – $190,000
- Maryland Range: $150,000 – $180,000
- Massachusetts Range: $150,000 – $206,000
- Minnesota Range: $130,000 – $190,000
- New Jersey Range: $155,000 – $200,000
- Ohio Range: $125,000 – $200,000
- NYC/Long Island/Westchester Range: $180,000 – $225,000
