Tax Senior Manager, Core Tax Services
About the role
The Core Tax Services Senior Manager is responsible for advising clients on the tax implications of their business objectives, evaluating and selecting alternative actions to lessen tax burden and cost of compliance, identifying different methods of complying with tax regulations while acting as the primary client contact for complex tax issues. In this role, the Core Tax Services Senior Manager is charged with applying knowledge to understand potential tax issues, recognizing and communicating potential risks and potential changes in tax policy, and making top-level decisions regarding filing, preparation, and resolution of questions from federal and state agencies. In addition, the Core Tax Services Senior Manager will be a critical member of the office/region leadership team and actively participate in marketing, networking, and business development within an area of expertise and specialization while maintaining client relationships and acting as the primary contact for complex questions.
Responsibilities
- Tax Compliance: Ensure clients comply with all applicable authorities while minimizing tax and reporting burdens; ensure self and client service teams comply with Firm policies, standards, and the BDO Tax Quality Manual (TQM). Conduct top-level review of T/R and resolve all tax issues with clients; involve specialists where appropriate. Plan for early recognition of material tax and compliance issues and consult with client and/or partner as appropriate.
- Research: Identify when research is needed; clearly and concisely frame issues to be researched and report analysis. Identify complex issues for engagement team research and provide research methodology for efficient process. Train managers/staff on research skills and help frame tax issues for analysis. Involve firm specialists as appropriate.
- ASC 740 (FAS 109 and FIN 48) Tax Accruals: Correctly and proactively apply Firm policies, standards, and TQM regarding FAS 109 and FIN 48. Apply ASC 740 and related Firm policies. Help others learn and apply ASC 740. Review tax provisions with in-depth knowledge of ASC 740; review prepared workpapers. Explain and discuss with clients components of the income tax provision, uncertain tax positions, and other complexities surrounding ASC 740.
- Tax Consulting: Assist with developing, recommending, and implementing efficient and effective methods to maximize client benefits, especially by decreasing current and future taxes. Apply combination of tax knowledge and business/industry knowledge to recommend solutions. Maximize client benefits while managing risk. Confer with STS specialists to determine applicability of consulting specialties; involve STS when appropriate. Monitor implementation of tax consulting work plans (client service plan). Manage written or phone inquiries from federal and state agencies with little or no assistance. Provide effective assistance with protests at appeals level. Implement applicable Firm strategies. Manage client expectations.
- Tax Specialization: Develop in-depth understanding of technical and practical issues and opportunities regarding one or more taxation areas (e.g., individual, corporate, property, sales, pass-through, state and local, international, expatriate, transfer pricing, credits and incentives, compensation and benefits, accounting methods, R&D tax benefits). May be required to organize and conduct, or participate in conducting, effective external CPE training sessions in area of specialization involving Firm specialists, at minimum once per year. May train and mentor managers/seniors/associates on specialization areas.
- Strategy Development: Introduce and develop new or improved ideas to improve client positions or Firm personnel (e.g., by reducing taxes/expenses or providing non-tax benefits). Research and implement tax strategies, including experimenting with promising new strategies. Consistently suggest improvements to previous work products or approaches. May lead marketing campaigns if applicable. Present complex strategies to clients and prospective clients.
- Supervisory Responsibilities: Supervise associates and senior associates on all projects. Review work prepared by associates and senior associates and provide review comments. Train Associates and Seniors on current software tools. Act as Career Advisor to associates and senior associates. Schedule and manage workload of associates and senior associates. Provide verbal and written performance feedback.

Qualifications
- Bachelor's degree required; major in Accounting, Finance, Economics, or Statistics preferred.
- Master's in Accountancy or Taxation preferred.
- Eight (8) or more years of prior relevant tax experience and/or public accounting, private industry accounting, or consulting/professional services experience required.
- Industry expertise in one or more tax specialty preferred.
- Prior supervisory experience required.
- CPA certification, Attorney (admitted to practice in a U.S. jurisdiction), or Internal Revenue Service Enrolled Agent (EA) (or equivalent) required.
- Possession of other professional degrees or certifications applicable to role preferred.
- Proficient with Microsoft Office Suite preferred.
- Experience with tax research databases and tax compliance process software preferred.
