Whitley Penn, one of the nation’s leading audit, tax, and advisory firms, is looking for a Senior Tax Manager to join a collaborative, high-growth team that provides exceptional, personalized service across Audit, Tax, Advisory, and Consulting.

About the role

The Senior Tax Manager serves as the primary liaison between partners, clients, and professional staff, overseeing multiple client engagements simultaneously. Responsibilities include managing client relationships, identifying revenue opportunities, monitoring engagement economics, and coordinating workflow while guiding and developing team members.

Responsibilities

  • Serve as the liaison between the partner, the client, and the professional staff.
  • Assume full responsibility for multiple tax returns and client engagements; manage client relationships, expectations, engagement economics, and workflow.
  • Review and/or prepare 1065, 1040, 1120, and 1120S tax returns, quarterly estimates, extensions, and year-end projections.
  • Develop comprehensive client service plans (meetings, dates, assignments) in collaboration with the team.
  • Manage high-risk situations with Quality Control involvement as applicable.
  • Identify and research technical issues to ensure compliance with federal, state, and local tax laws and regulations.
  • Delegate and manage governmental tax examinations; represent clients before taxing authorities when needed.
  • Maintain year-round client contact; possess thorough knowledge of the client and all facets of their business; own the end-to-end relationship.
  • Monitor engagement economics by reviewing reports and data; respond actively to issues or discrepancies.
  • Serve clients in a consultative role, emphasizing exceptional service and identifying value-added opportunities; proactively interact with key client management to resolve problems and recommend business improvements.
  • Participate in practice development by designing and leading customized presentations and proposals, creating innovative approaches for new clients, and identifying additional services and revenue streams with current clients.
  • Ensure direct reports and coaches are actively engaged in performance improvement and development activities.
  • Communicate clear performance goals, priorities, and required competencies to team members.
  • Use coaching and managerial skills to enhance the development and growth of others.
  • Develop responsible, trained staff by assisting in retention, creating training materials, and acting as an instructor in professional development programs.
  • Participate in technical and professional training throughout the year.
  • Engage in the firm’s annual performance management and goal-setting process.

Requirements

  • 7+ years of experience in public accounting, demonstrating progression in tax return complexity, scope, and research.
  • Active CPA license.
  • Bachelor’s degree in accounting; Master’s degree preferred.
  • Extensive knowledge of the Internal Revenue Code and other tax laws, regulations, and guidance.
  • Professional appearance, demeanor, and positive attitude.
  • Ability to apply theory and experience to individual circumstances, analyze problems, and recommend solutions.
  • Ability to assess, analyze, and manage risk using appropriate frameworks, professional judgment, and skepticism.
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills; actively listens and clearly conveys ideas and information.
  • Ability to lead and work respectfully and productively with diverse individuals in various roles.

Schedule

Hybrid; general work schedule is Monday – Friday, 8 hours per day between 8:00 AM and 5:00 PM, with overtime as needed.
