Fast-growing Michigan CPA firm seeks an experienced Tax Manager to lead complex engagements for privately held businesses, investors, and non-profits, with a clear pathway to partnership and a genuine commitment to work-life balance.
Responsibilities
- Review and sign off on complex federal and state tax returns across entity types (1040, 1065, 1120, 1120S, 1041) for a diverse client portfolio
- Serve as the primary relationship owner for a book of business clients, delivering proactive tax planning and advisory guidance year-round
- Research multi-layered tax issues and partner with firm shareholders to develop and execute tax strategies
- Identify tax-saving opportunities, model risk scenarios, and communicate findings clearly to clients and leadership
- Supervise, mentor, and develop junior and senior tax staff—setting quality standards and reviewing their work product
- Stay current on federal and state tax law changes and translate them into actionable client guidance
- Contribute to practice development by deepening existing client relationships and supporting new-business conversations
Requirements
- Active CPA license (required)
- 5+ years of tax experience in a public accounting firm
- Demonstrated experience reviewing business-entity returns (1065, 1120, 1120S) and individual returns (1040, 1041)
- Proven ability to manage client relationships and deliver advisory-level tax planning
- Strong supervisory skills with experience mentoring tax staff
Nice to have
- Prior tax manager title or equivalent leadership role within a CPA firm
- Industry exposure in real estate, non-profits, or closely held businesses
- Experience with advanced tax planning or research software (e.g., CCH Axcess, Thomson Reuters, GoSystem)
- Master's in Taxation or LLM
Pay & Benefits
- Base salary: $120,000–$150,000, commensurate with experience
