About the role
The Tax Manager position is part of the National Tax Team, which supports the firm’s broader tax practice. This role is remote but may require occasional in-office attendance for client work, team meetings, or trainings.
Responsibilities
- Manage the preparation, review, and delivery of complex individual income tax returns.
- Lead and develop a team of tax professionals.
- Research and resolve technical tax issues related to individual, trust, estate, and gift taxation.
- Identify tax planning opportunities and communicate recommendations to clients and engagement teams.
- Ensure compliance with changing tax laws, regulations, and firm policies.
- Review workpapers and supporting documentation for accuracy, completeness, and consistency.
- Serve as a primary point of contact for clients regarding tax compliance and planning matters.
- Manage multiple client engagements and ensure deadlines are met.
- Communicate project status, tax implications, and recommendations clearly and professionally.
- Develop and maintain strong client relationships through responsiveness and proactive service.
- Absorb and prepare client invoices and follow up on overdue bills.
- Support staff career development through coaching and performance discussions.
- Foster a collaborative, positive, and high-performance team environment.
- Maintain workflow, staffing, and project deadlines throughout the year.
- Utilize technology and workflow tools to improve efficiency and quality.
- Support process improvement initiatives, automation projects, and standardization efforts.
- Ensure engagement budgets and realization goals are achieved.
- Participate in hiring, training, and retention efforts.
Requirements
- Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Taxation, or related field.
- CPA or EA certification required.
- 5–8+ years of public accounting experience, with significant experience in individual taxation.
- Experience reviewing Forms 1040, 1041, and 709.
- Strong knowledge of federal and state income tax laws.
- Experience using CCH Axcess Tax and related tax technology platforms.
- Advanced tax research and analytical skills.
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
- Strong organizational and time-management abilities.
- Ability to manage multiple priorities while meeting deadlines.
- Experience working with high-net-worth individuals, family groups, trusts, and closely held businesses.
- Experience with multi-state taxation, international reporting (FBAR, Forms 8938, 5471, etc.), and advanced individual tax planning.
- Prior experience leading teams and managing client relationships.

Pay
In Massachusetts, the salary range for a National Tax Manager is $110,000 to $170,000. Actual compensation within the range will be dependent upon the individual's skills, experience, qualifications and location, and applicable employment laws.
