About the role

The Tax Manager, Core Tax Services advises clients on tax implications, evaluates alternative actions to reduce tax burden, and acts as the primary client contact for complex tax issues. This role involves marketing, networking, and business development within a specialized area, and may require providing written tax advice to clients.

Responsibilities

  • Tax Compliance: Ensures clients comply with all applicable authorities while minimizing tax and reporting burdens, and ensures client service teams comply with Firm policies and the BDO Tax Quality Manual.
  • Conducts top-level review of tax issues and resolves them with clients; involves specialists as necessary.
  • Plans and reviews the tax process, budgets, and staffing; monitors engagement process and actual time incurred against budget; manages billing and collections; manages client relationships and expectations.
  • Applies knowledge to recognize potential tax issues, communicate risks, and changes in tax policy; identifies and communicates potential research needs; prepares WTA and tax returns according to Firm standards and ASC 740 (FAS 109 and FIN 48).
  • Manages tax accruals, applying Firm policies and standards, and explains income tax provisions and uncertain tax positions to clients.
  • Tax Consulting: Assists with developing and implementing methods to maximize client benefits, especially by decreasing taxes; develops and implements work plans for ongoing projects; provides technical resources and ensures compliance with Firm policies.
  • Tax Specialization: Develops in-depth understanding of one or more areas of taxation, such as individual, corporate, property, sales, corporate, pass-through, state and local, international, expatriate, transfer pricing, credits and incentives, compensation and benefits, accounting methods, R&D tax benefits; organizes and conducts internal CPE training sessions.
  • Strategy Development: Introduces and develops new or improved ideas to improve client, Firm, or Firm personnel positions; reviews tax implications and offers alternative courses of action; leverages lessons learned on prior projects.
  • Supervisory Responsibilities: Supervises associates and senior associates; reviews work prepared by them; schedules and manages workload; provides verbal and written performance feedback.

Requirements

Five (5) or more years of prior relevant tax experience and/or public accounting, private industry accounting or consulting/professional services experience are required. Prior supervisory experience is also required. Industry expertise in one or more tax specialties is preferred. A CPA certification, Attorney (admitted to practice in a U.S. jurisdiction), or Internal Revenue Service Enrolled Agent (“EA”) (or the equivalent of one of these designations) is required. Other professional degrees or certifications applicable to the role are preferred. Proficiency with the Microsoft Office Suite and tax research databases and compliance process software is preferred.

Qualifications

A bachelor's degree in Accounting, Finance, Economics, or Statistics is required. A master's degree in Accountancy or Taxation is preferred. Superior verbal and written communication skills, strong analytical, research, and critical thinking skills, and decision-making abilities are essential. The ability to work well in a team environment and develop and manage a team of tax professionals is required. Capable of composing written tax advice and developing and maintaining client relationships is important.

California Range: $112,000 - $150,000
Colorado Range: $104,500 - $115,500
Illinois Range: $105,000 - $130,000
Maryland Range: $113,000 - $120,000
Massachusetts Range: $120,000 - $127,000
Minnesota Range: $90,000 - $120,000
New Jersey Range: $115,000 - $140,000
Ohio Range: $105,000 - $150,000
NYC/Long Island/Westchester Range: $125,000 - $150,000
Washington Range: $107,400 - $126,900
Washington DC Range: $120,000 - $140,000
