About the role

The Tax Manager, Core Tax Services advises clients on tax implications, evaluates actions to reduce tax burden, and acts as the primary client contact for complex tax issues. This role involves marketing, networking, and business development within a specialized area, as well as providing written tax advice to clients.

Responsibilities

  • Tax Compliance: Ensures clients comply with authorities while minimizing tax burdens and self and client service teams comply with Firm policies and the BDO Tax Quality Manual.
  • Conducts top-level review of tax issues and resolves them with clients; involves specialists as necessary.
  • Plans and reviews the tax process, budgets, staffs, monitors engagement process, and manages billing and collections.
  • Manages client relationships and expectations, provides timely advice, and conducts research to identify and report on potential tax issues and risks.
  • Applies ASC 740 and FAS 109 and FIN 48 to tax accruals and prepares WTA and tax returns.
  • Communicates with Assurance counterparts to plan tax accrual reviews, including budget, scope, and delivery dates.
  • Utilizes and manages STS as needed.
  • Tax Consulting: Assists with developing and implementing methods to maximize client benefits, especially by decreasing taxes.
  • Serves as a technical resource and ensures compliance with Firm policies regarding WTA and exam support.
  • Trains associates and seniors on using current software tools and schedules workload.
  • Develops and organizes STS assistance on ongoing projects from clients.
  • Develops an in-depth understanding of one or more areas of taxation and may lead internal CPE training sessions.
  • Strategic Development: Introduces and develops new or improved ideas to improve client, Firm, or Firm personnel positions, such as reducing taxes or expenses or providing non-tax benefits.
  • Reviews studies of tax implications and offers alternative courses of action.
  • Identifies and leverages lessons learned on prior projects and offers input on improving processes and methods.

Requirements

Five (5) or more years of relevant tax experience and/or public accounting, private industry accounting or consulting/professional services experience are required. Prior supervisory experience is also required. Industry expertise in one or more tax specialties is preferred. A CPA certification, Attorney (admitted to practice in a U.S. jurisdiction), or Internal Revenue Service Enrolled Agent (or the equivalent of one of these designations) is required. Other professional degrees or certifications applicable to the role are preferred. Proficiency with the Microsoft Office Suite and tax research databases and compliance process software is preferred. Superior verbal and written communication skills, strong analytical, research, and critical thinking skills, and decision-making abilities are essential. Capable of working well in a team environment and developing and managing a team of tax professionals is required. Capability to develop and maintain client relationships is important.

Qualifications

A bachelor's degree in Accounting, Finance, Economics, or Statistics is required. A master's in Accountancy or Taxation is preferred. Possession of other professional degrees or certifications applicable to the role is preferred.

Skills

Capable of working well in a team environment and developing and managing a team of tax professionals is required. Capability to develop and maintain client relationships is important. Proficiency with the Microsoft Office Suite and tax research databases and compliance process software is preferred. California Range: $112,000 - $150,000
Colorado Range: $104,500 - $115,500
Illinois Range: $105,000 - $130,000
Maryland Range: $113,000 - $120,000
Massachusetts Range: $120,000 - $127,000
Minnesota Range: $90,000 - $120,000
New Jersey Range: $115,000 - $140,000
Ohio Range: $105,000 - $150,000
NYC/Long Island/Westchester Range: $125,000 - $150,000
Washington Range: $107,400 - $126,900
Washington DC Range: $120,000 - $140,000
