Tax Manager
About the role
We are seeking an experienced Tax Manager to lead tax compliance, planning, and client service for a diverse portfolio that includes individuals, partnerships, corporations, and trusts. The Tax Manager will supervise and mentor a team of tax professionals, review and prepare complex returns, ensure technical accuracy and regulatory compliance, and work directly with clients to deliver efficient, strategic tax solutions. This role is well suited to a CPA or experienced public accounting professional with strong technical skills in tax software such as UltraTax and CCH.
Responsibilities
- Manage and mentor a team of tax staff and seniors, providing training, performance feedback, and career development support.
- Oversee preparation, review, and timely filing of federal and state tax returns for individuals, partnerships, corporations, and trusts.
- Provide technical tax research and interpret new tax laws, regulations, and guidance to ensure client compliance and optimized tax positions.
- Develop and maintain strong client relationships; act as primary point of contact for tax planning, projections, and issue resolution.
- Cook up tax planning engagements, including year-end planning, entity selection, succession planning, and multi-state issues.
- Review workpapers, schedules, and supporting documentation to ensure accuracy and high-quality deliverables.
- Utilize and promote best practices in workflow, quality control, and process improvement to increase efficiency and reduce risk.
- Manage deadlines and resource allocation across busy tax seasons and off-season advisory projects.
- Collaborate with audit, advisory, and client accounting teams to deliver integrated client services.
- Participate in business development activities by supporting proposals, client meetings, and thought leadership initiatives.
Qualifications
- Bachelor's degree in Accounting, Finance, or related field required; Masters in Tax or Accounting is a plus.
- Licensed CPA preferred or active CPA license required where applicable.
- Minimum 5-8 years of public accounting experience with progressive tax responsibility; prior experience as a senior or manager in public accounting strongly preferred.
- Deep technical knowledge of taxation for individuals, partnerships, corporations, and trusts.
- Proficiency with tax preparation and research software, especially UltraTax, CCH, and common tax research tools.
- Demonstrated experience preparing and reviewing complex returns and tax provision calculations.
- Strong leadership and team management skills, with the ability to coach and develop staff.
- Excellent analytical, problem-solving, and written/verbal communication skills for client interaction and internal collaboration.
- Proven ability to manage multiple client engagements, meet strict deadlines, and maintain high attention to detail.
- Client-service orientation and business development aptitude, including experience working directly with owners and executives.
