Tax Accountant
About the role
This position is responsible for compiling and analyzing reports, preparing property, fuel and sales tax returns and researching tax issues. Additionally, this position maintains financial and confidential tax records for the department.
Responsibilities
- Compiles property, fuel, sales, income and related tax reports.
- Formats reports into a clear, logical presentation.
- Analyzes reports and presents findings to the Tax Manager.
- Prepares property, fuel, and sales tax returns.
- Performs a full cycle of return preparation from inception to completion.
- Reviews returns for accuracy, thoroughness and completeness.
- Analyzes and reconciles real and personal property tax assessments.
- Contacts various County Assessor’s Offices to obtain actual assessment, tests and re-calculates assessments and reconciles differences.
- Bridges any discrepancies to the attention of the Tax Manager to determine appropriate resolution.
- Tracks and maintains all business and contractor licenses expiration dates.
- Prepares and submits required paperwork to ensure licenses remain in active status.
- Researches various tax issues for the department.
- Clearly documents research and communicates findings to the Tax Manager.
- Maintains and organizes information to support Federal and California tax credits.
- Aids in gathering information for property, fuel, sales, and income tax audits.
- Prepares semi-annual political contribution reports.
- Ensures political limit thresholds are not exceeded as requests are processed.
- Maintains and updates various financial records and back-up documentation.
- Ensures accuracy and confidentiality for files and records.
Qualifications
- Education: Bachelor’s Degree in Finance, Accounting, Business or related field or an equivalent combination of training and related experience.
- Experience: Minimum 2-5 years of experience in tax, accounting and financial compliance or an equivalent combination of training and related experience.
- Thorough knowledge of all relevant federal, state and local requirements regarding financial records and taxes required.
- Property, Fuel, and Sales Tax experience desired.
- Solid knowledge of GAAP, corporate accounting and budgeting desired.
- CPA Certification desired.

- Physical Demands & Work Environment: Sitting for long periods of time working on the computer or attending meetings. Job site visits require walking on uneven ground, steep slopes, and exposure to extreme temperature and/or humidity. Some lifting materials and equipment up to 25 lbs.
Pay
The base salary range for this position is $90,833 - $127,167. The actual base salary is subject to variation due to the role, level, geographic location, relevant education, training, or experience, among other factors.
Schedule
Typical office environment with adequate temperatures and lighting, low levels of noise. Demands of meeting tight deadlines. Exposed to the conditions of job sites which can include loud noise, dust, fumes, and extreme weather conditions prevalent at the time. May work various hours, including early mornings, dusk or evenings.
