Tank Welder

About the role

PALA Interstate, LLC manufactures metal products such as pipelines, boilers, tanks, structural steel, and vehicles. The position involves laying out, fitting, and welding metal components according to job specifications, blueprints, and mathematical calculations.

Responsibilities

• Reads, studies, and interprets job specifications, plans, and blueprints.
• Uses basic math skills including geometry and trigonometry to make calculations for work.
• Completes difficult job tasks according to job specifications with minimal or no supervision.
• Understands and follows all safety rules and sets an example in Safety, Quality, and Production.
• Operates air arc-gouging and burning torches that require limited grinding to complete welding process.
• Operates all air and electric power tools used in a normal tank repair.
• Recognizes the proper fit-up of weld joints and understands and follows the outlined method of welding.
• Exemplifies proper techniques of rigging.
• Understands the proper use of key plates and fit-up equipment to control banding and peaking in horizontal and vertical seams.
• Welds approximately 180 linear feet of acceptable seal pass weld using 5P 3/16" electrodes.
• Welds approximately 250 linear feet of acceptable jet weld on 3/16" and 1/4" CS lap weld using 7024-1 electrodes.
• Welds approximately 130 linear feet of completed 3/8" comer weld using 7/32" 7018 electrodes.
• Completes vertical and horizontal welds for the following thickness using 7018 electrodes (completed weld).
• Welds items 8-10 with no more than 30 minutes of pickup work per day.
• Completes item 11 with an acceptable RT rate of 95% or higher.
• Works at elevations above ground level using vertical ladders positioned on tank scaffold and works in shell buggies.
• Performs work under breathing air conditions using required respirator.
• Willingness to perform other tank duties on an as needed basis.
• Operates a Man-Lift.

Requirements

• Minimum three years' experience in welding with SMAW, GTAW, and Flux Core processes.
• Must pass required welding tests as required by the specific job site.

Qualifications

• High School or GED preferred but not required.
• Trade School program preferred but not required.

Skills

• Understanding and following safety rules.
• Basic math skills including geometry and trigonometry.
• Ability to read and interpret job specifications, plans, and blueprints.
• Ability to weld to Section 9 of ASME Code in all positions.
• Ability to operate air arc-gouging and burning torches.
• Ability to operate all air and electric power tools used in a normal tank repair.
• Ability to recognize proper fit-up of weld joints.
• Ability to exemplify proper techniques of rigging.
• Ability to understand and use key plates and fit-up equipment.
• Ability to weld approximately 180 linear feet of acceptable seal pass weld.
• Ability to weld approximately 250 linear feet of acceptable jet weld on 3/16" and 1/4" CS lap weld.
• Ability to weld approximately 130 linear feet of completed 3/8" comer weld.
• Ability to complete vertical and horizontal welds for specified thickness.
• Ability to complete items 8-10 with no more than 30 minutes of pickup work per day.
• Ability to complete item 11 with an acceptable RT rate of 95% or higher.
