Tandem Tractor Trailer Operator

About the Role

As a Tandem Tractor Trailer Operator, you will drive an assigned tractor trailer to designated locations via specified routes to deliver and/or pick up shipments of various goods.

Responsibilities

• Oversee the loading and unloading of goods at designated spots according to written instructions, ensuring balanced distribution of load.
• Adjust load to meet prescribed wheel/axle load limits.
• Assist laborers, stores clerical staff, and inmate workers in loading and unloading goods, and in some cases, setting up and assembling goods.
• Verify goods loaded and unloaded against shipping documents or obtain signatures from receiving agents.
• Hitch trailer to tractor, and in the case of tandem loads, connect a second trailer to a dolly and attach hoses and lines for braking and lighting systems.
• Perform maintenance on trucks.

Requirements

• Possess and maintain a valid New York State Class A motor vehicle license.
• Meet New York State Thruway Authority (NYSTA) requirements for tandem trailer operation, including:
  • A current Commercial Driver License (CDL) with endorsements for doubles/triples (T) and air brakes.
  • If applicable, a Tanker and/or Hazardous Materials endorsement (X).
  • Be 26 years of age or older, in good health, and have a minimum of 5 years of provable experience driving tractor trailer combinations (e.g., tractor trailers/singles, lowboy trailers, dump trucks with pup trailers, walking floor trailers; not box trucks or dump trucks without a pup trailer).
• Pass the approved DOCCS Longer Combination Vehicle/tandem course within 30 days of hire.
• Obtain and maintain any additional driver’s license endorsements required by the New York State Department of Transportation (NYSDOT) for transporting specific types of products.

The appointment status is temporary. Employees unable to meet these requirements within 30 days of hire will be terminated for non-compliance with NYSTA and NYSDOT standards.
