About the role

The MTX Transmission & Distribution Engineering Department of the H Engineering Division at Hawaiian Electric Company has a management vacancy for a Professional role. Under the direction of higher-level design professionals, this position performs design, project engineering, project management, and general engineering duties in support of large customer service requests, third-party telecommunications attachment requests, and the capital construction programs of Hawaiian Electric.

Responsibilities

• Plan and conduct work requiring judgment in the independent evaluation, selection, and substantial adaptation and modification of standard techniques, procedures, and criteria.
• Devise new approaches to problems encountered.
• Independently perform most assignments with instructions as to the general results expected; receive technical guidance on unusual or complex problems and supervisory approval on proposed plans for projects.
• Prepare plans, layouts, design calculations, and related engineering design work in accordance with Company standards, applicable codes, ordinances, and regulations.
• Develop new or improved techniques and procedures for equipment, material, products, or methods.
• Perform project engineering and project management functions on large customer service requests and major capital projects.
• Work with City/County, State, and Federal government agencies on rules, regulations, and permits regarding projects.
• Meet and discuss with customers and/or their consultants various service requirement matters.
• Review and approve customer’s electrical plans for conformance with all service requirements and established Company standards such as the Electrical Service Installation Manual, EUSERC, and the NEC.
• Conduct engineering studies, third-party telecommunication attachment design reviews, prepare reports, and review/comment on technical reports and studies prepared by others.
• Prepare requests for proposal for engineering services, evaluate proposals, and make recommendations.
• Direct design efforts by consultants and check designs prepared by consultants.
• Develop project schedules and project cost estimates for inclusion in the capital budget.
• Prepare material, equipment, and construction specifications for bid, evaluate proposals, and make recommendations for purchase.
• Serve as technical consultant to customer planners/designers.
• Perform computations, such as short circuit current, overcurrent relay, fuse coordination, motor starting, voltage drop, and customer demand load.
• Assist with the application of the Company’s tariff, engineering standards, EUSERC, and the NEC.
• Conduct field inspections to verify field conditions and check compliance with specifications, then prepare reports of findings.
• Participate in Company emergency response activities as assigned, including any activities required to prepare for such emergency response.
• Understand and follow the Company’s Policies, Mission, Vision, Values, and culture dimensions to ensure the success of the company.

Requirements

• Thorough knowledge of the principles and practices of power engineering design, project engineering, project management, design standards, and construction methods associated with electric utility facilities, normally acquired through a minimum of 5 years of relevant engineering experience.
• Thorough knowledge of the application of the Company’s Tariff, Electric Service Installation Manual, EUSERC, NESC, and processes/agreements governing third-party telecommunication attachments.
• Working knowledge of personal computers and related software applications such as spreadsheets and word processing; ability to learn additional software tools to perform work.
• Working knowledge of City/County, State, and Federal laws, regulations, and procedures as related to specific projects and assignments.
• Knowledge of Hawaiian Electric’s Capital and O&M budget procedures.
• Working knowledge of business writing, accounting, economics, business law, and finance are desirable.
• Working knowledge of LEAN continuous improvement principles and best practices to achieve operational excellence.
• Working knowledge of SafeStart principles and best practices to achieve a safe workplace environment.

Qualifications

Senior Level: Extensive (10+ years) of utility distribution, transmission, and/or customer service requests electrical design experience, or a Bachelor of Science in Engineering degree from an accredited engineering school or equivalent may be substituted for five (5) years of experience.

OR Intermediate Level: 3-5 years of utility distribution, transmission, and/or customer service request electrical design experience, or an Associate’s degree in electrical technology or related field from an accredited college or university, or a Bachelor of Science in Engineering degree from an accredited engineering school or equivalent.

Pay

The hiring range for this position is $79,600.00 to $101,600. The selected candidate will be placed according to their skills and qualifications.
