Systems Safety Engineer - Aviation
This position supports the Department of Defense (DoD) located in Redstone Arsenal, AL.
About the Role
Provide overall guidance and direction to Program Managers (PMs) to accomplish the objectives of the system safety engineering program. Furnish technical advice and assistance to PMs in matters of system safety engineering, including software system safety across all phases of the acquisition life cycle. Assist with command activities and PMs in planning, establishing, implementing, and revising safety directives, policies, procedures, techniques, and training related to aviation system safety, accident prevention, and personnel/equipment safety during aircraft development, test, repair, and maintenance.
Responsibilities
- Establish system safety design criteria and requirements for aviation systems and special projects.
- Perform independent safety analyses, studies, and design evaluations of systems, subsystems, and equipment.
- Review airworthiness documentation, technical manuals, publications, maintenance procedures, and test reports to ensure adequate safety information, accuracy, warning notes, and emergency procedures are included for personnel protection and system operation.
- Ensure safety requirements are included in hazardous item contracts and provide safety engineering support during fielding and sustainment of supported programs.
- Other duties as assigned.
Requirements
- U.S. citizenship required.
- Must possess or be able to obtain a Secret Clearance.
- Bachelor’s degree in engineering with 6+ years of work experience, or 10+ years of recent and related work experience in lieu of a degree.
- Independent work experience with safety analyses, studies, and design evaluation of systems, subsystems, and equipment.
- Ability to review airworthiness documentation, technical manuals, publications, maintenance procedures, and test reports to ensure safety information and emergency procedures are adequately prescribed.
- Experience with Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, PowerPoint) and Microsoft Teams.
- Strong communication skills, both verbal and written, with internal and external customers.
- Ability to work outside normal schedules and adjust to meet peak periods and surge requirements.
- Must be organized with good time management skills and able to work in a team-oriented environment.
Qualifications (Desired)
- Experience in Aviation System Safety.
Schedule
This position is onsite and offers a 9/80 schedule with every other Friday off. Some travel may be required. Schedules are subject to change based on position or customer needs.

Work Environment
Generally an office environment, but may involve inside or outside work depending on the task. Work may require sitting or standing for extended periods (90% of the time) and may require lifting and carrying up to 25 lbs. (5% of the time). Regular attendance in accordance with an established work schedule is critical.
