About the Role

Under general supervision, provides technical support and implements solutions for MPS systems; coordinates and manages assigned projects.

Responsibilities

  • Programs, troubleshoots, repairs, and maintains IT systems equipment; tests and inspects equipment; aligns and adjusts equipment according to manufacturer specifications.
  • Provides technical support for IT system users; defines problems, identifies and isolates errors, and implements technical solutions to solve problems; works independently and makes appropriate decisions based on experience.
  • Monitors system environment, access, security, functionality, and utilization; assures optimum performance, integrity, and maximum uptime.
  • Plans and manages assigned IT projects from design through completion, according to project timelines, budgets, state and Federal regulations, and MPS standards; manages contractors, contracts, and special projects.
  • Plans and schedules project timelines and milestones using appropriate tools; tracks project milestones and deliverables; develops and delivers progress reports, proposals, requirements documentation, and presentations.
  • Monitors project worksite; evaluates project status and documentation; assures project meets job specifications, budget, schedule, quality and safety standards, and productivity goals.
  • Manages contracts, identifies technical issues, and monitors project activities; reviews and approves change orders; evaluates and resolves contract and technical issues.
  • Monitors, analyzes, and reviews systems and processes and makes recommendations that will increase application operating efficiency and promote an environment of customer cooperation and satisfaction.
  • Evaluates and makes recommendations on IT system equipment to ensure compliance with specifications.
  • Trains technical support and assigned department personnel to use and support fileservers, microcomputer software facilities, and other system-related devices and applications.
  • Coordinates user support activities with other departments and divisions as assigned.
  • Keeps records of equipment location, failures, and operational status.
  • Assists in development of disaster recovery plans for fileservers and microcomputer systems.
  • Demonstrates courteous and cooperative behavior when interacting with students, clients, visitors, and MPS staff; acts in a manner that promotes a harmonious and effective workplace environment.
  • Enthusiastically promotes the Superintendent’s goals and priorities in compliance with all policies and procedures.
  • Maintains absolute confidentiality of work-related issues, records, and MPS information, including highly confidential documents relating to individual employee private information, confidential departmental documents, and collective bargaining negotiations.

Requirements

  • Associate’s Degree in computer technology or a closely related field; AND four (4) years of experience in programming; OR an equivalent combination of education, training, and experience as determined by Human Resources.
  • Knowledge of programming languages related to assigned area, fileserver and microcomputer operating systems and applications, hardware, data communications, physical security systems, and security packages.
  • Knowledge of principles and protocols for the management of MPS electronic information, IT access policies, and data security protocols.
  • Skill in preparing complex reports and graphics, reading and interpreting complex materials, analyzing security systems specifications, debugging computer hardware and software, and contributing to team efficiency.
  • Skill in maintaining knowledge of current technology, operating a personal computer with specialized software, assessing and prioritizing multiple tasks, and establishing effective working relationships.
  • Skill in communicating effectively verbally and in writing.
  • A valid Minnesota State Driver’s License may be required.

Physical Demands and Work Environment

  • Work is performed in a computer laboratory and standard office environment.
  • Occasionally lifts file boxes or heavier materials with assistance; frequently lifts and carries light objects.
  • May require walking or standing to a significant degree or sitting most of the time with long periods of computer work and heavy phone usage.
  • Requires vision capacity to perform fine calibrations and differentiate between colored wires.
