About the role
The Yale School of Management (SOM) is a world-renowned graduate business school that offers several degrees and programs. SOM’s mission is to educate leaders for business and society, deeply integrated into all activities from classroom pedagogy to campus management. We are seeking a Systems Engineer 3 to join our Information Technology team at SOM, reporting to the Associate Director of Infrastructure Services. This engineer will design, manage, and optimize enterprise IT infrastructure across cloud and virtualized environments.
Responsibilities
- Enterprise Infrastructure & Virtualization Engineering – Assist in the design, administration, and optimization of enterprise storage and virtualized environments across Azure, S3, Proxmox, VMware, OpenShift, and comparable platforms. Ensure high availability, scalability, and performance while implementing structured backup and disaster recovery strategies, including scheduled restore validation to maintain business continuity and recovery assurance aligned with defined RTO/RPO objectives.
- Infrastructure as Code & Secure Lifecycle Management – Own full infrastructure lifecycle management using Infrastructure as Code (IaC) principles. Leverage Terraform and Packer for automated provisioning and standardized builds, utilizing GitHub (or similar repositories) for version control, peer review, and CI/CD-driven deployments. Embed security controls directly into infrastructure pipelines to ensure consistent, auditable, and compliant system builds.
- Automation, Configuration & Secrets Management – Develop and maintain automation frameworks using Ansible Automation Platform to orchestrate deployments, configuration management, patching, and compliance enforcement. Implement secure credential and secrets management solutions such as HashiCorp Vault, promote passwordless authentication (e.g., key-based SSH), enforce least-privilege access, and manage SSL/TLS certificate lifecycle processes.
- Cross-Platform Systems Administration & Compliance – Provide administration and support across Windows and Linux environments with a strong emphasis on security hardening and standardized configuration baselines. Partner with security teams to remediate vulnerabilities, enforce CIS-aligned controls, maintain patch compliance targets, and eliminate legacy or insecure protocols.
- Monitoring, Logging, Operational Support & Documentation Excellence – Oversee infrastructure monitoring, centralized logging, and audit trail integrity to ensure traceability of system and configuration changes. Conduct regular backup validation and recovery testing across hypervisor and storage platforms. Participate in a rotating infrastructure support model to resolve escalated service desk tickets, non-automated permissions issues, and infrastructure projects. Maintain comprehensive documentation including SOPs, architectural diagrams, automation workflows, and operational runbooks.
- Develop or modify moderately complex software programming applications from specifications.
- Monitor, support, and troubleshoot IT infrastructure, ensuring adherence to standards and service level objectives.
