About the role

Work hard. Have fun. Make history. Our overall mission is simple: we want Amazon to be the place where our customers can find, discover, and buy anything online. Whatever our customers want, we will find the means to deliver it.

As a Systems Development Engineer you will be part of a global initiative developing and delivering the next generation of world-class fulfillment systems through advanced technology. You will own the development and improvement of deployment processes, validate and test processes via lab and field activities, and integrate, deploy, and troubleshoot solutions for new advanced technology systems. You will serve as the liaison between Fulfillment Center Operations and product development engineers, building relationships across cross-functional teams and capturing the voice of the customer.

Responsibilities

  • Support installation of complex cross-functional projects with considerable business impact, potentially spanning organizations or geographies.
  • Work with internal and external engineering teams to deliver high-quality cross-functional projects on-time, on-budget, maintainable, and low-defect.
  • Contribute to project priorities, establish milestones, and drive schedules to meet deadlines.
  • Establish, capture, and present KPI metrics to evaluate project success and failure.
  • Deep dive technical solutions encompassing advanced technology applications, conveyor hardware selection, material handling integration, and commissioning content and expectations.
  • Participate in design reviews and support execution efforts with internal teams and outside vendors, including equipment specifications, material flow, process design, and site layout.
  • Communicate project status, answer detailed technical questions, and produce clear summaries for program management.
  • Capture and synthesize the Voice of Customer for new product introductions and leverage this information to prioritize system defects and influence triage efforts with Product Development teams.
  • Build strong working relationships with Fulfillment Center/Sort Center management and operations teams across multiple sites, as well as Facilities, Finance, Safety, Process Engineers, and other stakeholders.
  • Identify process improvement initiatives supporting operations, deployment, or engineering teams within a geographic node.
  • Develop cross-functional knowledge of Operations and Engineering systems, processes, procedures, and tools.
  • Collaborate with internal teams and external vendors to generate high-quality, cost-effective solutions with quick turnaround.
  • Travel up to 75% throughout North America, varying with peak seasons.

Basic qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, Systems Engineering, or related fields.
  • Experience in Unix or scripting in one or more languages (e.g., Bash, Python, Perl, Ruby).
  • Experience programming with at least one modern language such as C++, C#, Java, Python, Golang, PowerShell, Ruby.
  • Experience leading the design, automation, deployment, and support of large-scale infrastructure.
  • Experience working with complex automated material handling equipment, packaging technologies, and systems including robotics and high-speed manufacturing.
  • Experience in network design, including major routing protocols, topology design, network hardware, device configuration, and traffic engineering.
  • Experience using Lean Process Improvement, Six Sigma methodologies, or related performance metrics/process improvements to increase efficiency in forecasting, planning, optimization, and logistics.
  • 3+ years of motor controls experience (motor starts, variable frequency drives, DC drives, and standard electrical components).
  • 3+ years of control system experience including PLC/IPC-based controls design, development, implementation, testing, and support (e.g., Allen Bradley, Siemens, CODESYS).
  • Experience creating technical documentation such as flow diagrams, conveyor and equipment layouts, installation details, and work instructions.
  • Demonstrated understanding of life-cycle embedded systems development including hardware (circuit and logic designs, PLCs), software (embedded operating systems and programming), testing, and implementation.

Preferred qualifications

  • Master’s degree in electrical engineering, computer science, mathematics, or physics.
  • Experience debugging, profiling, and implementing software engineering best practices in large-scale systems, or building complex software systems delivered to customers.
  • 2+ years designing or architecting new and existing systems (design patterns, reliability, scaling).
  • 4+ years of non-internship professional software development experience.
  • Experience with version control systems and CI/CD pipeline implementation.
  • Knowledge of Agile or Scrum environments and professional software engineering best practices across the full development life cycle.
  • Experience in technical leadership of development, testing, and implementation of large-scale, complex technology projects.
