About the role

Work hard. Have fun. Make history. Our overall mission is simple: we want Amazon to be the place where our customers can find, discover, and buy anything online. Whatever our customers want, we will find the means to deliver it.

As a Systems Development Engineer, you will be part of a global initiative developing and delivering the next generation of world-class fulfillment systems through advanced technology. You will serve as a liaison between Fulfillment Center Operations and product development engineers, owning the development and improvement of deployment processes while validating and testing through lab and field activities.

Responsibilities

  • Support installation of complex cross-functional projects with considerable business impact, potentially spanning organizations or geographies.
  • Collaborate with internal and external engineering teams to deliver high-quality, cross-functional projects on-time, on-budget, maintainable, and low-defect.
  • Contribute to project priorities, establish milestones, and drive schedules to meet deadlines.
  • Establish, capture, and present KPI metrics to evaluate project success and failure.
  • Deep dive technical solutions encompassing advanced technology applications, conveyor hardware selection, material handling integration, and commissioning content.
  • Participate in design reviews and support execution efforts with internal teams and outside vendors, including equipment specifications, material flow, process design, and site layout.
  • Communicate project status, answer detailed project questions, and produce clear summaries for program management teams.
  • Capture and synthesize the Voice of Customer (VoC) for new product introductions and prioritize system defects to influence triage efforts with Product Development teams.
  • Build strong working relationships with Fulfillment Center/Sort Center management and operations teams, as well as Facilities, Finance, Safety, Process Engineers, and other stakeholders.
  • Identify process improvement initiatives supporting operations, deployment, or engineering teams within a geographic node.
  • Develop cross-functional knowledge of Operations and Engineering systems, processes, procedures, and tools.
  • Collaborate with internal teams and external vendors to generate high-quality, cost-effective solutions with quick turnaround.
  • Travel up to 75% throughout North America, varying based on peak seasons.

  • 3+ years of control system experience including PLC/IPC-based controls design, development, implementation, testing, and support (e.g., Allen Bradley, Siemens, CODESYS).
  • Experience creating technical documentation such as flow diagrams, conveyor and equipment layouts, installation details, and work instructions.
  • Demonstrated understanding of life-cycle embedded systems development including hardware (circuit and logic designs, PLCs), software (embedded operating systems and programming), testing, and implementation.

Preferred qualifications

  • Master's degree in electrical engineering, computer science, mathematics, or physics.
  • Experience debugging, profiling, and implementing software engineering best practices in large-scale systems.
  • 2+ years of designing or architecting new and existing systems (design patterns, reliability, scaling).
  • 4+ years of non-internship professional software development experience.
  • Experience with version control systems and CI/CD pipeline implementation.
