Systems Administrator
About the role
The Systems Administrator is responsible for maintaining the availability and integrity of the program’s physical and virtual infrastructure. They manage and maintain daily tasks for physical and virtual server and storage systems, ensuring proper maintenance and repair. They also apply firmware and software updates, work with vendors, and develop and implement security policies.
Responsibilities
- Maintains overall responsibility for the availability and integrity of program’s physical/virtual infrastructure.
- Manages and maintains daily tasks for physical/virtual server and storage systems, including monitoring system performance, configuration, maintenance, and repair.
- Ensures that records of system downtime and equipment inventory are properly maintained.
- Applies revisions to host system firmware and software.
- Works with vendors to assist support activities.
- Develops new system and application implementation plans, custom scripts, and testing procedures to ensure operational reliability.
- Trains staff in how to use new software and hardware developed and/or acquired.
- Performs troubleshooting as required. Leads problem-solving efforts often involving outside vendors and other support personnel.
- Installs, modifies, and maintains systems and utility software on server computer systems.
- Provides server support related to other software.
- Ensures high availability and acceptable levels of performance of critical computer resources.
- Develops procedures, programs, and documentation for backup and restoration of host operating systems and host-based applications.
- Develops and coordinates project directions and schedules to maximize benefits and minimize impacts on programmatic activity. Provides input in planning and implementation of projects for computer operations and systems administration.
- Develops tools and procedures for program team members.
- Maintains up-to-date knowledge. Stays current with technological developments in systems administration technology and recommends ways to take advantage of new technology.
- Develop and implement security policies, procedures, and best practices to protect the organization's digital assets.
- Conducts regular security audits and vulnerability assessments to identify and mitigate potential risks.
- Manages firewalls, intrusion detection systems, and other security tools to safeguard network integrity.
- Maintains up-to-date knowledge. Stays current with technological developments in systems administration technology and recommends ways to take advantage of new technology.
- Monitors network traffic for suspicious activities and responds to security incidents.
- Stays up-to-date with the latest cyber threats, vulnerabilities, and security technologies.
- Educates and trains employees on security best practices and awareness.
Qualifications/Technical Requirements
- Minimum Education: Bachelor's degree in Engineering or Computer Science, Information Technology from an accredited college or university.
- Experience: 3 years of experience within industry as a help desk support, system administrator, programmer, developer, and/or Systems engineer.
- Specific Experience: 2 years of professional experience reading and manually patching, STIG and fixing computer systems; 2 years of professional experience troubleshooting software and hardware experiences; Specific experience with VMWARE and VDI environments, VSAN, NSX, Windows & Linux OS, networking, Atlassian stack, backup recovery, and process documentation.
- Certification: Certification in cyber security (e.g., CompTIA Security+, CISSP) is a plus. If not certified, training will need to be obtained within 3 months of onboarding.
- Skills: Strong knowledge of network and system administration, including Windows and Linux environments; familiarity with firewalls, intrusion detection/prevention systems, and anti-virus software; excellent problem-solving skills and attention to detail; effective communication skills and the ability to work collaboratively with cross-functional teams; managing server virtualization technologies like VMWare vSphere or Microsoft Hyper-V/Virtual Server; a solid understanding of LAN/WAN networking; Group Policy design and configuration; Active Directory/LDAP user and group administration; LAN Routing and Switching design, configuration and troubleshooting (VLANs, IP Subnetting, 802.1Q trunks).
