About the role

Leidos’ Defense is seeking a System Safety Engineer to join a matrixed organization of systems engineers, model-based systems engineers, and specialty systems engineers. This position will support between 1 and 3 efforts simultaneously, balancing tasks throughout a 40-hour workweek. Efforts vary from physics-based modeling & simulation to hardware development, and may involve both classified and unclassified work.

Responsibilities

  • Autonomously define tasking derived from customer needs and contractual documents.
  • Perform system safety analysis tasks in accordance with MIL-STD-882E and customer program requirements.
  • Work independently on various safety artifacts required for different applications.
  • Collaborate with multi-disciplinary teams in a collaborative engineering environment.
  • Communicate effectively within a team environment.
  • Support multiple programs across different engineering fields with varying team environments.
  • Have the opportunity to support a different program in the matrixed engineering portfolio upon completion of current efforts.

Requirements

  • A Bachelor’s degree in Systems Engineering, Software Engineering, Computer Science, Computer Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Aerospace Engineering, or equivalent from an ABET-accredited university with 12+ years of experience, or an MS with 10+ years.
  • Demonstrated familiarity with MIL-STD-882E and its application to system safety programs.
  • Experience in deriving requirements for complex electrical, electro-mechanical, mechanical, and software systems.
  • Ability to perform in a collaborative engineering environment working closely with multi-disciplinary teams.
  • Experience effectively communicating within a team environment.
  • Resident of the North Alabama area or willing to relocate to the Huntsville - North Alabama, AL area.
  • Possess a secret clearance or ability to obtain.

Qualifications

  • A Bachelor’s degree in Systems Engineering, Software Engineering, Computer Science, Computer Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Aerospace Engineering, or equivalent from an ABET-accredited university with 12+ years of experience, or an MS with 10+ years.

  • Experience in hazard analyses (PHA, FHA, SHA, SSHA, O&SHA, EHA, HHA, FTA, FMEA).
  • Experience conducting hazard analyses (PHA, FHA, SHA, SSHA, O&SHA, EHA, HHA, FTA, FMEA).
  • Experience with safety tools and databases (e.g., hazard tracking systems, model-based systems engineering, requirement databases).
  • Experience leading a team of engineers.
  • Experience accurately estimating engineering effort (i.e., hours) associated with System Safety Engineering tasks.
  • Experience supporting one or more DoD programs.
  • Experience with Object Management Group (OMG) Certified System Modeler Professional (OCSMP) certification.
  • Experience with INCOSE Systems Engineering Professional (SEP) certification (ASEP or CSEP).

SkillsFamiliarity with AR 385-10, AR 385-16, AR 770-3, and AMCOM 385-17.
  • Experience with Army Safety Board processes and preparation.
  • Experience conducting hazard analyses (PHA, FHA, SHA, SSHA, O&SHA, EHA, HHA, FTA, FMEA).
  • Proficiency with safety tools and databases (e.g., hazard tracking systems, model-based systems engineering, requirement databases).
  • Experience leading a team of engineers.
