About the Role

Provides component technical interpretations of design requirements as they apply to the maintenance and operation of electrical and mechanical nuclear plant components. Provides engineering recommendations and alternatives for solving operational problems involving system and component performance. Areas of focus may include but are not limited to valves, pumps, motors, heat exchangers, etc.

Serves as the primary plant contact and is responsible for assigned component. Develops solutions and engineering options to support safe, reliable and efficient system operation. Develops and performs tests to demonstrate that component design requirements and specifications are met for modified systems.

Performs work which involves conventional systems engineering practice but may include a variety of complex features such as conflicting design requirements and difficult coordination requirements. Work requires a broad knowledge of component and system precedents and performance as well as an extensive knowledge of principles of instrumentation and control theory and electrical principles.

As a fully competent system engineer in all conventional experience aspects, conducts work requiring judgment in the independent evaluation, selection, and adaptation of standard problem solving techniques and the application of system procedures and criteria. Devises new approaches to problems encountered.

Responsibilities

  • Provide component technical interpretations of design requirements for nuclear plant components.
  • Develop engineering recommendations and alternatives for operational problems involving system and component performance.
  • Serve as primary plant contact for assigned components.
  • Develop solutions and engineering options to ensure safe, reliable, and efficient system operation.
  • Perform tests to verify component design requirements and specifications for modified systems.
  • Address complex engineering challenges, including conflicting design requirements and coordination issues.
  • Apply broad knowledge of component/system precedents, instrumentation, control theory, and electrical principles.
  • Independently evaluate, select, and adapt standard problem-solving techniques and system procedures.
  • Devise new approaches to encountered problems.

Supervisory Responsibilities

  • May supervise or coordinate the work of multidiscipline engineers, technicians, and others who assist in specific assignments.

Supervision Received

Independently performs most assignments with instructions as to the scope, priorities, and deadlines. Receives technical guidance on unusual or complex problems and supervising engineer’s approval on proposed system/component improvements and plant operation impact assessments.

Requirements

  • B.S. degree in electrical engineering or other related engineering degree from an accredited curriculum, plus appropriate continuing education.
  • Demonstrated proficiency in electrical engineering as evidenced by completion of Engineering Graduate Progression Plan or equivalent post-engineering graduate education and experience (at least 2 years of related experience and 1 year of nuclear power plant experience).
  • Must be able to obtain and maintain unescorted nuclear plant access and S-3 and S-4 medical qualifications when applicable.
  • Must be able and willing to assume “on-call” rotational assignments which may include 24 hour-a-day, 7 day-a-week availability.
  • Must be willing and medically able to work rotating shifts and maximum overtime permitted by NPG procedures during peak periods.
  • Must be able and willing to travel to plant locations as required when performing assigned tasks and, as necessary, to be temporarily assigned to a field location.

Qualifications

  • Licensed Professional Engineer (desirable).
  • Membership in professional and technical societies (desirable).
