About the role

Provides component technical interpretations of design requirements as they apply to the maintenance and operation of electrical and mechanical nuclear plant components. Provides engineering recommendations and alternatives for solving operational problems involving system and component performance. Areas of focus include valves, pumps, motors, heat exchangers, and related equipment.

Serves as the primary plant contact for assigned components, developing solutions and engineering options to support safe, reliable, and efficient system operation. Develops and performs tests to demonstrate that component design requirements and specifications are met for modified systems.

Performs work involving conventional systems engineering practice, addressing complex features such as conflicting design requirements and difficult coordination needs. Requires broad knowledge of component and system precedents, principles of instrumentation and control theory, and electrical principles.

As a fully competent system engineer, conducts work requiring independent evaluation, selection, and adaptation of standard problem-solving techniques and system procedures. Devises new approaches to problems encountered.

Responsibilities

  • Demonstrate advanced technical expertise in large industrial pumping systems, including application, qualification, selection, testing, maintenance, and lifecycle management of heavy-duty pumps and fluid-handling equipment.
  • Apply deep knowledge of pump hydraulics, rotating assemblies, impeller and casing technologies, shaft and bearing systems, materials science, mechanical seals, lubrication, motor-pump alignment, and fluid-delivery architecture.
  • Perform diagnostic testing, condition assessment, and troubleshooting of large industrial pumps.
  • Interpret complex mechanical and hydraulic failure modes, execute root-cause analyses, and implement corrective and preventive actions based on industry standards, vibration data, performance curves, and reliability test results.
  • Provide daily technical coordination across design engineering, procurement, maintenance, operations, and planning organizations to ensure equipment reliability, regulatory compliance, and adherence to plant safety requirements.
  • Provide engineering input to long-range major maintenance strategies and capital planning by recommending refurbishment, rebuild, or replacement intervals based on environmental conditions, operating profiles, runtime hours, wear patterns, age-related degradation, and quantitative pump performance tests.
  • Develop and perform tests to verify component design requirements and specifications for modified systems.
  • Conduct operability evaluations and equipment failure analyses.
  • Perform 10CFR50.59 reviews and ensure compliance with industry codes and standards.
  • Assume "on-call" rotational assignments, including 24/7 availability, and work rotating shifts with overtime as required during peak periods.
  • Travel to plant locations and accept temporary field assignments as necessary.

Requirements

  • BSME or closely related engineering degree (required).
  • B.S. degree in electrical engineering or related field from an accredited curriculum (required for this role).
  • Extensive hands-on experience in diagnostic testing, condition assessment, and troubleshooting of large industrial pumps.
  • Demonstrated proficiency in electrical engineering, evidenced by completion of an Engineering Graduate Progression Plan or equivalent post-graduate education and experience.
  • Ability to obtain and maintain unescorted nuclear plant access and S-3/S-4 medical qualifications.
  • Willingness and ability to work rotating shifts, overtime, and assume "on-call" responsibilities.
  • Ability and willingness to travel to plant locations and accept temporary field assignments.
