About the role

The System Director, Environmental Services provides strategic leadership and operational oversight for all Environmental Services (EVS) functions across the health system. This role is responsible for driving system-wide standardization, financial stewardship, quality outcomes, and excellence in patient experience across all EVS service lines. The System Director ensures EVS services are delivered safely, efficiently, and cost-effectively across acute and non-acute care settings, aligned with organizational objectives and professional standards.

Responsibilities

  • Lead system-wide strategic and operational planning for EVS service lines, including environmental hygiene, waste management, pest control, linen services, and patient experience initiatives.
  • Partner with site EVS Directors to develop and execute standardized practices, workflows, training programs, and branding across the health system.
  • Ensure EVS services support organizational priorities related to safety, infection prevention, regulatory compliance, and patient satisfaction.
  • Develop and oversee annual operating budgets for assigned EVS cost centers, including monthly variance analysis and action planning.
  • Present monthly financial performance, variance explanations, and corrective actions to Hospitality Services senior leadership.
  • Coordinate and submit quarterly productivity normalizations and characteristic surveys in collaboration with Finance.
  • Establish and monitor annual cost-saving targets across the system, with accountability plans for site leadership.
  • Oversee system-wide EVS capital planning, prioritizing equipment needs across facilities.
  • Develop and submit capital request A3s for review and approval by AVP/VP Hospitality Services.
  • Analyze spending trends, contract compliance, rebate performance, and invoicing for EVS-related professional services.
  • Lead negotiation, evaluation, and renewal of EVS contracts; interpret legal and operational contract terms to ensure value and compliance.
  • Maintain responsibility for standardized EVS policies, procedures, and system initiatives.
  • Co-chair the EVS Advisory Council with the AVP of Quality to drive best practices, product standardization, and continuous improvement.
  • Ensure alignment with infection prevention standards, accreditation requirements, and regulatory expectations.
  • Ensure EVS team member competencies, onboarding, training, and annual in-service requirements are current and properly documented.
  • Oversee recruitment strategies and annual performance management processes for EVS leadership teams.
  • Conduct regular safety huddles and structured leadership meetings focused on KPIs, productivity, financial performance, staffing, and patient experience outcomes.
  • Lead system-wide EVS patient experience initiatives, reinforcing service excellence and service recovery expectations.
  • Ensure accountability to service line agreements and departmental performance standards.
  • Maintain high visibility across all facilities with a documented monthly rounding schedule.
  • Facilitate effective communication between EVS teams, clinicians, infection prevention, support services, and executive leadership.

Ideal candidate profile

  • Multi-site healthcare EVS leadership experience
  • Deep knowledge of infection control and floor care operations
  • A proven ability to develop leaders and hold teams accountable through coaching and mentorship
  • Strong relationship-building skills across diverse hospital environments
  • The courage to make difficult decisions and bring forward solutions
  • Experience identifying operational opportunities and standardizing best practices
  • HRO experience as a strong plus

Qualifications

Education: Bachelor's Degree required; Master's Degree preferred.

Experience: Minimum of 7 years related work experience and minimum of 7 years leadership experience required.

Certification: Certified Healthcare Environmental Services Professional (CHESP) within 12 months of hire required.

Work environment & location

Work is typically performed in an office environment. The selected candidate will be expected to travel regularly throughout the Geisinger service area. Candidates should currently reside within the Geisinger footprint or be willing to relocate to Pennsylvania. The assigned office location will be based on the Geisinger campus nearest to the candidate's residence.
