About the Role
Seeking an experienced Switchgear Design Engineer capable of interpreting customer Single Line Diagrams (SLDs) and developing optimized Low Voltage (LV) switchgear designs. The candidate should be proficient in selecting appropriate Current Transformer (CT) ratios, performing electrical design calculations, and engineering compact, high-power-density switchgear solutions that maximize performance within limited enclosure space. The design must comply with applicable UL standards and successfully meet all UL certification requirements, including type testing, construction review, and Follow-Up Service (FUS) compliance.
Responsibilities
Greenfield Project Responsibilities
- Participate in establishing a Greenfield LV/MV Switchgear manufacturing facility.
- Develop engineering standards, design procedures, and product documentation from the ground up.
- Support factory layout planning and design integration with manufacturing processes.
- Coordinate with project teams during equipment installation and production setup.
- Assist in vendor selection and technical evaluation of manufacturing equipment and tooling.
Switchgear Design & Engineering
- Design LV and MV Switchgear panels, MCC, PCC, Distribution Boards (DB), and Control Panels.
- Prepare General Arrangement (GA) drawings, Single Line Diagrams (SLD), wiring diagrams, schematics, and fabrication drawings.
- Design copper and aluminium busbar systems based on current carrying capacity and short-circuit withstand requirements.
- Prepare Bills of Materials (BOM), technical specifications, and manufacturing drawings.
- Perform electrical calculations, including:
- Busbar sizing
- Cable sizing
- Short-circuit calculations
- Voltage drop calculations
- Heat dissipation
- Protection coordination
Standards & Compliance
- Ensure designs comply with applicable UL standards.
- Support type testing and routine testing activities.
- Coordinate with third-party testing laboratories for product certification.
- Maintain compliance with customer specifications and regulatory requirements.
Manufacturing Support
- Provide engineering support during switchgear panel assembly.
- Resolve manufacturing and installation-related technical issues.
- Improve product manufacturability and reduce production costs through design optimization.
- Support prototype development and first-article inspections.
- Participate in value engineering and cost reduction initiatives.
Cross-Functional Coordination
- Work closely with Sales, Projects, Procurement, Production, QA/QC, and Service teams.
- Coordinate with customers for technical clarifications and design approvals.
- Support Factory Acceptance Testing (FAT) and customer inspections.
- Provide technical support during commissioning activities.
Requirements
- Strong knowledge of LV and MV Switchgear design.
- Experience designing PCC, MCC, APFC Panels, Distribution Boards, Synchronizing Panels, and Control Panels.
- Proficiency in AutoCAD Electrical, EPLAN, SolidWorks Electrical, or similar CAD software.
- Knowledge of electrical protection systems and relay coordination.
- Understanding of UL standards.
- Strong knowledge of electrical components, including:
- Air Circuit Breakers (ACB)
- Molded Case Circuit Breakers (MCCB)
- Vacuum Circuit Breakers (VCB)
- Contactors
- Relays
- Busbars
- Current Transformers (CTs) and Potential Transformers (PTs)
- Familiarity with ERP systems and engineering documentation.
- Excellent analytical and problem-solving skills.
Qualifications
- B.E./B.Tech in Electrical Engineering.
- 8–15 years of experience in LV/MV Switchgear design.
- Experience in Greenfield manufacturing projects is highly preferred.
- Exposure to product development and technology transfer.
- Knowledge of Lean Manufacturing and Design for Manufacturing (DFM) principles.
- Experience working with international customers is an advantage.
